Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
Here it comes; The jonnie-come-lately big companies who've been bagging on longboards for years are now smelling cash. Watch, I predict some longboard footy in a big company viddy before the year's over.

Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
even if they start running longboard content... I suspect it will be for the same reason they run longboard ads: $$$
I would probably continue not reading SBC (and reading CW)
-
Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
YO MB,
That's a pretty accurate claim/call out.
But you know that they can always say... "Those aren't the traditional longboards, these are just different shaped skateboards made by a well known skateboard company."
(which would be a joke of a response)
And what do ads even mean to people in these magazines anyhow... didn't your poll that you recently took say that they aren't really effective in most cases?
But I mean... at the end of the day.... $
-
Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
actually our poll showed a lot of things...
we received over 450 responses and they are still coming in!
as to the question: what type of affect does CW have on you
51 folks said "it doesn't really have that much of an affect on me, but it's still cool to read
128 said they use CW to explain it to people who don't get it
and a whopping 185 people said it motivates them to visit websites...
course, a lot of folks said they liked reading it on the toilet.
Advertising, especially niche advertising does have a dramatic affect - simply for the fact that it's targetted.
This is so much more about ads....it's about the principle of thing.
Like the times I get exceedingly frustrated when I see helmet ads in skate mags that never showcase folks wearing helmets...
But back to reality....
this is the just the beginning of the great "cruiser revolution" brought to you by all those "core" companies that want everyone to forget the past 15 years...HELLO!!!
the hypocrisy is delicious...for years these mags have been ignoring what's happening out there...and now because some other companies have seen the light...and rebranded them as "cruisers" well, now it's a whole new day.
For years we were classified as non-skaters....
THEN
Sector 9 sells for millions...
AND THEN
the economy tanks....
AND THEN SUDDENLY
they start to realize that maybe things are changing...and they have to get busy!
I wouldn't be calling bullshit on these guys if I didn't think that they truly deserved it.
They did a huge DISSERVICE to skateboarding.
Now, watch as SBC and Transworld et al scramble to make companies like Element, Habitat, Speed Demons, Santa Cruz the "legitimate" cruiser/longboard brands.
Actually, on second thought, they'll happily take their money and probably not run any editorial....
put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
I take this personally...look, I am friendly with all these guys and I know the editors on down must be cringing having to run these ads...
it frustrates me to no end.
it would be one thing if some of these "cruiser" companies had something truly innovative....but it just so smacks of a cash grab. I guess cork griptape is slightly innovative...thanks Habitat!
: )
sorry, I know I should quit while I am ahead...

Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
but but...if you quit, where would all the good and yummy info go???
-
Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
Well I'm sure if any longboarding company paid the right cost they could get an ad too....
basically, those who read those "big name" magazines are all up in those certain companies... they are big fans of their skate teams, etc.
they aren't going to want to put a longboard company that SF or CW features on there because that is not their "target"
That's all.
Two separate worlds.

Michael, thought provoking thread. I picked up TW tonight and saw the ad you are talking about. It will be interesting to see if this trend picks up. Keep watching for us and let us know what you find.
As someone who has recently fallen hard for longboarding, I have to say I didn't find much interesting in TW... Please keep up your laser focus with Concrete Wave... it will continue to pay off.

Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
ta cutting....can you please scan and post up the sector 9 ad...put it in its own thread
it is truly an amazing ad - the first one in transworld skateboarding...
we are holding things at 100 pages -

Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
I checked out the Element website for their longboards a couple of weeks ago. I was NOT impressed at all. They did not tell what length each board was (huh?) - nor did they seem to be in the same vein as all the big longboarding companies are, and the way they design and build boards. Element needs to wake up if they want to sell Longboards (IMHO).
I have a feeling your going to see a lot more of this type of thing - keep at em MB !!!
Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional...

I hope Chuck Hults make some money from his shapes. His Deckcrafters decks are killer, and according to Paul Schmitt he might have invented (or perfected) the double kick deck. He deserves a little recognition and $$.

I would say something, but Bob Dylan says it a little bit better
If your not skating for fun, what are you skating for?

Re: the dirty hippy types (aka longboarders) and the Element ad in SBC
somehow, I don't see how Dylan would shred the gnar
I think he would gnar on the shred!
