I used to get heated over this but I don't really care anymore. The one's who know will support who they see fit. Any company trying to break into all the "action sports" at the same time doesn't care about the core of any of them.

Don't get heated...read it to see what the uber-consulted marketing gurus are thinking and telling or seeking to influence. Forget who it is.

you can't be a little bit pregnant...but it turns out you can be both "core" and "mass market," if you're Nike

    hmmmmmmmm

    I ain't buying that.

But if in your mind, you think that NIKE SB and 6.0 are completely different, then they must be...

You guys know what this is about? this is about the softgoods market purchases not nearly being sufficient enough to carry the sales, when distributed solely to the "selected" skate shops.

6.0 is the effort that will bridge beyond the "selected" skate shop market directly into the malls, where it is a total lifestyle appeal market.

Basically, following the same path that the mainstream skateboard market has followed by relying on the fashion market to be the real seed for the profits.

We are seeing how the mainstream skateboard market works, in action. It aint about skateboarding. the hardgoods market of skating, true skating (not impulse trendies) is at a much lower level. this is where the softgoods are coming to the rescue.

Now that the neophyte market analysis is complete. I want to show the guys that still contend that Nike is not part of skating. check out the first thrasher magazine cover. Nike may not have been a marketed skate shoe, but it was one of the shoes of choice.
But, I dont want to dwell on the Nike shoe issue. I know where my allegiance lies, and it aint with the mainstream skateboard market at all. Nike was here long before they were. However it is very interesting watching the angle of attack being employed by Nike, and seeing that the "skate" market aint the same as the "mainstream" market.
My comments represent a selfishly one sided 1970's skateboarder mindset, and do not reflect the current fashion-skate-lifestyle industry's views.

I think you've nailed it on that point: Nike advertised that they'd stand by their shops... but the shops aren't moving enough product, so Nike needs a way to go true mass-market w/o appearing to breach that committment. Hey, add another line!

Notably, it's a big player that's going to start selling "skate image". Will it be thrash-n-destroy, or what will they pick? Will there be any impact from that?

I was at Kohls this evening, and there were lots of Vans there that were clearly mass market models/versions.

Me personally I was always anti Nike, but after putting a pair on I was hooked, after riding pool in them for over 4 months.....I'm hooked. SB all the way.

There will always be a difference between a skateboarder gone mass-marketing and a mass-marketer gone skateboarding.

Look how wal-mart destroyed the diversity in rural business, do we want the diversity in skateboarding destroyed in the same way?

To be honest after reading this thread it really doesnt seem to me how any of the current companies I am aware of making shoes are core companies , the products being pushed seem to be for the manufacturers...or there sweatshops. To be aimed towards the other companies crimping off others sales by one upping the cheetah print or neon than the other it seems the competition has squashed the companies who were not really worried about other companies. They were worried about the users of thier product, not about finding the cheapest way to produce something to maximize there profits on a slightlty inferior product..

I do understand companies are in business to make money I just choose to support the companies who really are for the advancement of the sport even if there handmade product cost more..

IE slide gloves ...although they are relativly easy to make the high quility gloves go for close to a hundo ...they are quality products ...not designs sent to china to be returned in what ever quality the factory deems as suitable for a product...you think every worker making products in a factory knows what the intended final use will be?

theres my rant -choose to support who you wish because the money ends up in there pocket.

I dont see that much of a big deal about this. I really dont think kids that like nike shoes preferrably will go out and say "Hey! Nike has a skate/action sports line now! I think I'll buy a pair for the hell of it!" I dont think that will happen at all and I dont think it has either. Also, it sucks that they have underprivileged kids making these shoes, but at least they're good products. They definetly should find new means of manufacturing and not use kids, but the shoes are awesome. I had some 6.0s and now I just received some SB P.Rods. I love em.

I have to agree. I admit I ride in a pair of Mossimo shoes I bought for 17.99 at Target, but still the Nike thing kinda bugs me. I want skating to progress, I want an industry that produces better gear, but I like the stuff put out by the little hardcore folks. It just seems more wholesome. I'm really not up enough on modern gear to know the difference in shoes though.
