    Is a really good one!
I rarely get emotionally moved from a magazine, but the Mofo story brought a tear to my eye.
How come Thrasher didn't publish it?
The piece on Warren Bolster was great too.
    Thanks!

Way too long for their format and they don't exactly have the audience for serious stuff like this. When Thrasher started, it was basically for and by skaters in their 20s but as they built skating back up in popularity, it began to be more a magazine for kids (still the largest group of skaters). Besides, Phelps is...well, Phelps.

Thanks to Michael for publishing this story.

    I don't like the photo...

Don't get me wrong, I think CW could use a moderate amount of street footage in there, I mean, it is still the essence of skateboarding and it doesn't have to be about huge handrails. Just skating things that weren't made for skating, that's skating.

    Why not this photo though?

Its a lame shot, I don't care if the guy is a respected dude, I know a million guys who can ollie or wallie that parking block.

Secondly: he's sporting nike shoes and I though CW was against that, now here that company is getting newstand covearge, free Nike ad to not only every guy who reads Concrete Wave, but also to every guy who DOESN'T read CW but at least glances the cover over in a 7-11.

Better luck next time. I'm sure the content will be amazing as always.

Mac, this is ruderick in Arvada. Just to let you know, I haven't seen my issue yet either as of yesterday's (Saturday's) mail. I'm a new subscriber and I've bugged Michael at least twice so far in anticipation. I'm working on being patient. At my age, patience can sometimes be a stretch.

At least it fits much of the usual content of Concrete Wave in that the skater featured, while being a totally nice guy and a cool, stylish skater, isn't really all that good. Better than me, sure, but...not pro level and him having a model on SMA is baffling to me. Bennett seems like a good guy but little kids here are better than him and many of the 30+ crew are as well. Having a pro model used to mean something...

Similarly, having your photo in a skateboard magazine used to mean something...but CW is full of shots of totally average skaters doing totally average things (not talking about the covers, but the inside stuff). When one looks at the photos (and many of the articles, too) the message seems to be, "hey, i can do that, too," and not the awe-inspiring, inspirational, "I want to get to the level where i can do that," of the original Skateboarder or Thrasher.

But every once in a while, you go and do something like this story by MoFo and it keeps me coming back. Bravo.

To be honest, I kindof prefer the current formula of 5:1 good to amazing. Keeps things in perspective as to the reality of the majority of skaters. Atleast thats how it seems around the streets, parks and pools where I live. Its always good to see what the pros are capable of and say to myself "wow, I wish I could do that...one day." but I get more inspiration from the skaters closer to my level of mortality. Beyond that, I would also add that CW does not strike me as a good example of a typical "skate mag". I do agree that theres an emphasis and professionalism that is lost with who gets pro models today, sorta sad.

Haven't had a chance to read the new 'ish, but looking forward to it.

You probably would've hated the '70s version of SkateBoarder magazine. At least 8 covers prominently featured Nikes (on the likes of Olson and Pineapple), and on several more you could identify the shoes by the distinctive sole pattern. And back then, SkateBoarder had a bigger circulation than all current skate mags combined...

Maybe you've just seen him on an off day. I've skated with Bennett numerous times over the last several years, and he often has the same effect at parks that Alva used to have, where people stop skating and gather around to watch him. I saw him pull stuff opening week at Glendale that I haven't seen anyone else do since...
