I don't know San Jose at all but I guess the one thing I would worry about is how the police will react? Is skating legal in the city? And will cops be predisposed to hassle any kid carrying a board down the sidewalk? And then there's any sort of vigiliantism where again anyone with a skateboard is a target.
This sort of thing could get out of hand in a hurry.
Just because you can take a naked picture of yourself doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Re: Pack Of Mad Skateboarders Pummel Newlyweds
Did anybody see the Gus van Sant movie Paranoid Park? Released a week ago.
A skateboard was used as a weapon in an accidental homicide. Skateboarding was central to the plot and the main characters are "skateboarders".
--------- begin quote -----
As Larry Clark once put it: "There is more life in a skateboarder skating down the street than in a hundred Hollywood actors." No matter that said skater is likely to be an inarticulate white middle-class stoner in baggy jeans - for a certain brand of film-maker, skateboarders embody the soul of young America like nobody else. There are plenty of reasons: they are the quintessential urban tribe; they are romantic radicals on the edge of society; and they are generally photogenic teenagers. Their sport has never been uncool; Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi notwithstanding, it's possibly cooler now than ever. And, occasionally, they get out of the house and do something cinematic.

DaddyYo, I see the point you are trying to make. However, I still fail to see the correlation between skateboards and violence. They are 2 mutually exclusive facets of expression and in no way influence one another.
The very fact that the 2 movies that you mentioned exist demonstrates the misconception society has regarding skateboards and violence. They are 2 completely seperate things and I see no more significance in the fact that the "kids" skated than if they got to the park in little red wagons. The only connection between the 2 is that skateboarding lends it self well to an urban environment. Crime rates are traditionally higher in urban areas due to a number of problems including neglect, poverty, poor education, and societal pressure.
Skateboarding is not a gateway drug nor is crime a road towards skateboarding

I took a bad fall on 5/24/2008 at Mt. Baker, went off the road and fell down the side of the mountain. I went into a coma, badly broke my pelvis, lacerated my liver and almost died on the mountain AND later in the hospital. The rehabilitation therapists had to teach me how to do everything again...everything.

My post: I have sent Erik and email to see if he can find out if WE as a positive skating community can add more monies to this reward.
Or we as a community of positive non life threatening skaters CAN help with bills.
If we can paypal or send a check for $1 and there is 10,000 of us SF'er's, I think it GREAT that we would try to help.
Are you with me?

that actually sounds like a very good idea. it'd be a nice gesture, and a way of redeeming the skateboarding community.

You are, of course, correct. Everyone on this forum knows that skateboarding does not lead to violence. Thats why some people get mad when we hear stories like this that suggest there is a connection.
However, I suspect that if the attack took place on a golf course the headline would read "golfer attacks .........." Funny though, I don't think other golfers would take offense as they know golfing and violence are not related.
Maybe that was my original thought in pointing out the movie Paranoid Park. Skateboarders are aware of how they are portrayed in media. Or is it that media designs and markets a culture and lifestyle which we adopt. Are kids just living up to the rep we designed for them? Life imitating art? As Daddy Yo points out.

What in the F is going on here lately? What is the fascination with finding and posting the most negative stories on skaters you can find?
There are tons of skaters doing very good things for a variety of causes. How about posting those stories?
Nooo, wouldn't want that. <---- sarcasm

This is what I feel has happened in many cases. It still feeds in on the whole mainstream saturation thing. You have individuals that are within this market, taking advantage of something for the totally wrong reason.

My comments represent a selfishly one sided 1970's skateboarder mindset, and do not reflect the current fashion-skate-lifestyle industry's views.

Re: Pack Of Mad Skateboarders Pummel Newlyweds
no offense really, but i think the driver logically had the right to start flooring the car and running them over, im not even kidding. a car has enough force to go from 0 to 60 even with things blocking it (tested it, 8 of my friends surround the back of a car, and he was still able to pull out, dont ask why we were testing it)
i dont know, if i felt my LIFE was endangered, id start hurting people...
