Is Skating LEGAL in SANTA MONICA?

For anyone who doesn't know Marion Karr is in Califnornia this weekend for work. He just called me to let me know he was going to check out the old Zephyr surf shop.

Well, after that unexciting venture he called me back to tell me "skating all the way over here from Venice was a waste of time."

I thought about that for a moment and then asked him, "is skating legal in Dogtown? I think I've heard it is not." Whereupon Marion said he was the only skater he had seen but there were no signs prohibiting riding a board.

Am I right or being overly cautious? Also, what areas of So Cal is it legal and illegal to ride? I'd hate to see our boy spend his whole weekend in lockup because the bail hearing wasn't until Monday morning.

i' skate SM alot and even if theres an actual law in the books, they never mess with you..
unless ur hammering one of their beautiful ledges. thats why they built the park..
but do tell him to stay away from the 9 story garages next to the 4th St.Promenade, its a bust. Real cops on mountainbikes roll up there..and the Promenade itself is illegal to skate[but who cares, too many tourists stroll through there anyway]] other than that, its a free for all..

Back in '78 we used to ride all through there, and put on slalom demos at Venice Beach.
There is definitely the chance that people have been run into by skaterz, and they adjusted the rules.

It's been a long time.
