Maybe he didn't?
One of the criticisms of Bolster and other skate photogs back in the day is they would get what looked like a great move or trick . . . . but didn't show the skater bailing in the next split second. You'd be stunned to learn just how many of those great Dogtown pool shots ended in a bail because as soon as the skater struck a pose he was outta' there and running it out. (Or crashing and burning.)
I'm not going to guess what's going on in that shot but the assumption is that's it's a long, slow carve down the hill. It could be. Or it could be he sqatted down for less than a second, Bolster got the shot with a motor drive and then the skater either layed out and bailed or stood up real quick and put his foot back. We'll never know.
But, hey, that's the beauty of a captured moment: it's all in the imagination.
Just because you can take a naked picture of yourself doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Yeah, was thinking he's going to fall on his butt pretty soon after that shot. Good picture nonetheless.

Ha! thats how Jay Adams ( aged around 15 at the time) did that picture of him front side airing, with his board completely overturned... Looked like he had control there.

Re: Legacy of Warren Bolster
I guarantee you that Steve Cathey didn't bail just after the photo was taken. I've seen him do that move many times in old movies. I think I even have some old footage of myself and friends doing the same thing, I'll see if I can dig it up and post it here.

Hung, check your PM's. I found something you might like.

Re: Legacy of Warren Bolster
In regards to Steve Cathy being able to hold a pose like that.. Check out the Downhill Motion DVD, I believe there is a whole sequence of Steve Cathy doing moves like that, skating down the same hill. I may have even been the same session as the picture. BTW..isn't that the same picture that became the Skatebaorders Mag Logo? While on the subject of old cool surf-style moves....I have always wished I could do a Christie. I never could balance on one foot like that in that position. How do they do it???

That was one of those moves that just about everybody copied early on, except that nobody could get quite as low as Steve did.

Up until having reconstructive surgery on my left leg a few years ago, I could still do those. Balance was never really an issue with those. As long as you were carving, the g-force would hold you up. If you straightened out, or ran out of momentum, then you were in trouble...
