In real life I don't care or discuss these sort of skateboarding topics, I just don't have anything better to do while I'm at work (except work)

Re: Thrasher - July
my personal prediction: in thenext few years you will see may pro street skaters bombing hills, hittin 40mph and doing it on a short board.. most have been doing it for years, a good friend of mine has toppd 40 on a street deck, but it will get exposure, nd i will crap my pants watching it, cause that is just plain scary, anything over 25 on a short board scares me.... but anyway, be on the look out.. any real good skater can be darn good at any other disapline with a little work.

dude....that would hurt us. you know the ones who do it safely with stable boards and safety gear.
if your prediction comes true, i see some even harsher skateboarding laws and bad press on DH
it is gnarly as #### though

Go to the grocery store side lot or elementary school near my house and you'll see kids grinding the curbs and kickflipping in one spot all session. Go to a skate park with a bowl and you'll see more adults skating. Just my observations. Of course, this doesn't account for every single person who likes to skate, but I think it covers the majority.
times are changing, and thrasher's coverage reflects it.
with the skatepark boom, many kids are getting good at bowl riding.
I see this at my local park, these kids are killing it in street and bowls.
the new cunningham though, I was there last saturday, it seemed like only the old guys were skating the bowls, I think the kids are turned off by the full pad rules and $2+$6 fee.
another analogy,
longboarding in thrasher
is like
scooter in a chopper mag.
or
recumbents in velo news
(btw, I like scooters!)
anyone remembers Internation Longboarder ??

Re: Thrasher - July
Full pads rules that would leave 3 of us in my town who even own them and none of us regularly wear elbow pads
of course that would be the impetus for me to finally buy a set of PD elbow pads
Scooters are cool...I went skateboarding and even snowboarding on my scooter in Japan...picture a 6'1" American on a 50cc scooter carrying a 175cm race snowboard and a big ass backpack full of stuff rolling down the road to the train station

Back in 2002, they ran an article on the first race of the FCR Series ("Battle By The Bay"). Unfortunately, they titled the article "Barneys By The Bay", thus ensuring that slalom would not be seen as cool...

ensuring?
come on, you make it sound as if Phelps got a magic wand and can control the minds of the youths.
even most longboarders don't think slalom is cool..
(which is too bad, because it would teach them how to turn better)
sure Thrasher is biased (or as MB say myopic), but hating on Thrasher is not gonna change anything, except creating more bitterness.
longboarding has been doing fine without the mainstream mags' approval.
maybe we should enjoy the fact that it doesn't get too much press in the media, or next thing you know K-Rimes will be starring in a reality show on MTV and doing energy drink commercials... (hey wait, wasn't he on Scarred...)

Salba is what all OG's strive to be...plus he's the poster child for Pro Designed pads
not that there is anything wrong with that

I'm not hating on Thrasher, just saying it was unfortunate that the one time this decade they did an article on slalom, they didn't present it in the best possible light. If this is the only exposure to slalom that the average Thrasher reader gets, which approach would be more likely to get them inspired to try it: "Barneys", vs "Here's what Independent trucks were originally designed for", or at the very least, "Here's another aspect of skateboarding you probably haven't seen before"?

Most skaters I know who have run cones, get bored quickly after a few runs and it has nothing to do whatsoever with 'looking cool'. And you don't need to run cones to 'learn how to turn'. You turn by turning, you don't need a tight cone course to teach you that.
