Re: Seismic Ad in Spring CW
I'm a graphic designer so I pay a lot of attention to advertising.
When it comes to advertising, for me, it's the imagery that attacts me first - and the text is what may sell me. Advertising isn't a hard science and I don't believe that you need to have a massive budget to have creative and appealing ads. That particular Seismic ad did nothing for me - so I barely noticed it. In this current issue of CW (Summer 2008 ) the Seisic BlackOps ad (2 chicks kissing a BlastWave wheel) was again pretty lame (IMO), so I didn't even read it. I noticed it but really wasn't drawn to it and just turned the page.
However - the page before it - there is the TailTap ad. For me - the illustration was really awesome and I studied the entire ad pretty closely. So from my perspective - the imagery spoke to me and I was interested in the entire ad. Now I know that TailTap is my "One stop shop for hard to find skate products". Whoo-hoo - I'm gonna visit their website to see what I can't find anywhere else.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - is it not?

Yes, same for me. The tailtap ad caught my eye and I read it and studied it.
On the other hand, the DBS ads are not high concept or artsy but I read them because there seems to be a story there. Even the controversial one where the guy is grabbing stink in a staged pose. The message I get is that it is a real shop with real people, not an online drop ship order filler.
The ad on the inside front cover - I don't get what the message is or for who. Easy to flip by.

Re: Seismic Ad in Spring CW
Seismic laid bare...
I have this friend, let's call him "Dewey", he was the first guy I ever knew who had a computer, he went on to work for various government agencies, before being lured away by Silicon Valley. After a few years there he grew bored and started his own gig...finding things that aren't supposed to be found. He owed me a favor, here's what he "uncovered"...
This was the original image that was supposed to run in the ad...who blinked?
Images were in fact taken in a studio. You wish you were there.
Dan says she's a hot rider, and she's learning how to skate now, too.
He gave her a skate lesson the other day.

Re: Seismic Ad in Spring CW
Here's the thing...we have received a few complaints about the new ad from Seismic (the two girls kissing the wheel).
I figured we might get those...but I showed the ad to my editors and we all agreed to run the ads
My sense is that folks who read CW want to know about the product and how it performs....but they also have a sense of artistic flair/creativity.
Ads that bridge both those universes (ie left/right side of brain) seem to be what people dig the most.
Keep the comments coming..

Um, I find it un-offensive...humorous even...people need to lighten up...open up some short board mags if you want to see what it offensive...
I agree with what you have and have not sensored of what I know...keep up the good work!
LAX's ad in the Buyers guide was much more "adult" than that...

The photographer and the models (who work together often) got, er, creative when I stepped out of the studio. Some of the resulting images are eye-catching, to say the least. But they didn't match our ad concept... or the publisher's sensibility.

I don't know that any of us found it "offensive". To me - they look like a couple of 70s soft porn chicks and not all that attractive, really. I get the correlation (Grip and Rebound - Twice the Love) and using the two women to relay that - it's just kind of lame and tame looking.
As for the humor in the ad - I don't think it's really all that humorous either. Very few of the ads (in CW) are humorous. The one company that does have somewhat funny ads are Paris. I loved their "Greenest Skateboard Truck" ad in the Buyer's Guide.

Re: Seismic Ad in Spring CW
marv = winner. I defy anyone to top that one.
FWIW, on the "Jilly B" ad, I agree, not a very good Photoshop job--so "bad," in fact, I almost thought it was intentional in a Magritte sort of "this is not a pipe" way. I also actually thought maybe Seismic was aiming it more at female skaters--say, the college girl who sees someone on a longboard and wants to try it herself. Maybe said girl sees that ad and thinks, 'Cool, a female skater in a cute outfit. Maybe I could do that.' And before anyone gets all huffy about that idea, remember that many of us--heck, probably most of us--started skating for similar reasons. You know, 'Wow, that looks fun/cool/fascinating.'
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams
