i mean... some of you guys are actually going out of your way to put the idea down. whats up with that?. i mean sure.. its silverfish... and a forum... but damn people...

Call it what you want, SKogging or switch pushing, dancing whatever. all i want to do is get some people going that want to skate for a while some days of the week. Getting some exercise and enjoying the boardwalk here in SD.

A single speed can have a free wheel (so the wheel can continue spinning even if i stop pedaling) a fixed gear you have a cog and no free wheel... so if the wheel is spinning so does the pedals... no coasting.. or need for brakes...

What idea? That he invented the four basic stances to push (LOL!) or that everyone else is "wrong?"

he just said that there is a right way to do the pushing, just like there is a wrong and right way to tuck when speedboarding, just like there is a right and wrong way of doing slalom, and sliding and cross stepping and oh so many different things in skating.

I don't mean to hate on yandall... but your superiority complex and narrow minded view of skateboarding just annoys the sht out of me. If i wanted someone to judge me and tell me i'm doing something wrong... I would have done gymnastics.

About the stoke thing.. whatever, anybody who has skated with me can vouch that i am "stoked" (i really hate that word) about everykind of skateboarding and love meeting new people to skate with. I like to travel a lot and skate with new people as much as I can. Telling people that what they're doing isn't skogging because its not exactly how you do it, is "spreading the stoke".... how?

As for who I am, I'm Patrick Schep, I enjoy skateboarding. I'm not really good for anything but hosting sessions in my neighborhood, driving kids to spots because they're too young to drive, helping people learn some slides , lending out my gear, etc. AKA not much.
And yeah I'm pretty good at bitching, I'm bored at work most of the day so I get irritable and bitching is probably my best skateboarding trick I've landed so far. If I learn how to skog correctly, then that may surpass bitching.. but i'm not sure.

Nah rocks are no fun, haven't thrown one since I hit a kid in the head in 5th grade and got suspended. I'd love to skate with you, and if I'm ever in the area, I'll definitely hit you up. Flat ground pushing isn't really my thing, I mean I do it to get to places but not really for fun... except for playing in NYC traffic, thats a whole lot of fun. You should come out to the broadway bomb next year, so you can dominate everyone with your beastly skateboarding abilities... sorry "skogging" abilities.

hey rodgon used to think skogging was goofy until he road 20 miles with me one day. i guess the mature people that look at the movement as a discipline might respect it more but as you can see there are some huge haters of it. which means, skogging gets under their skin. they have something to hate and want others to hate it too. the fact remains, most people that see the mechanics performed agree it's viable exercise. most of these people are non skateboarders. they take it at "face" value. not some little twerp kid who started skating 5 years ago and thinks he's the cats pajamas.

and you're right. i never said i invented the movement. what I did invent is the word "skogging" to represent my flair on using both legs to push my board. since I've been actively skogging since the mid 70's, I got pretty damn good at it and not many can hold a candle to the operation of moves I perform in "skog" mode. this aint braggin. this fact. i ride practically every day like a runners/jogggers do but I have a skateboard under my feet.

i used to try to defend the skog.

from this point on, and at the urge of respectable skaters, i will only deal with positive stoked skaters that want to increase their riding techiques and look to their skateboard for aerobic/yoga like exercise. i will attempt to clue them in if they request advice.

dowhillers, lugers, park riders and streeters can benefit from the skog. or not.

it's easy to pull things out of context and point fingers at one thing without seeing the whole.

All I can say is, I enjoy my skateboarding whether it be racing downhill, parks and freestyle. All of it together is skateboarding. I am into flat-land riding and there is a method that I promote. Switch stance, carve, push and pump. (skogging is my style of doing it). If that's too hard for your to understand than perhaps you need a lesson. I'm doing FREE seminars on request.

I love being a part of industry and the history of real skateboarding.

At 54, I can still skate crazed. now is that Stoked or What?

you can SWITCH anyway you want.

There are dance steps that you can do that are very right and some very wrong. I have a skogging step. I promote that step. It works quite well as the SKOG. But SWITCH can be anything you like.

If you want to follow my dance steps as the SKOG, more power to you

But SWITCH push, carve and pump are absolutes that anyone can attempt to do. Mastering them is something that I'll do as long as I can. Being a rollerskater for many years, I have a push backward technique that is part of the SKOG.

So, don't feel threatened that you are doing ANYthing wrong. Just know that SWITCH is where you are at and when you become good at it and want to throw the skog down, and I mean crank up some funky town music and jam on your deck, then you'll know what the skog is all about.

And if I sound cranky, it's because I'm old 54 year old man pissed off at growing old and ain't gonna let it happen as long as my LONGBOARD is near me.

This is how it looks to me.

Samoa, you attest that there is a right and wrong way to do skogging. In this thread, it's been compared to how there is a right and wrong way to tuck, to do slalom etc. However, you know that you're tucking properly if you are going faster than those around you, and you know you're doing slalom correctly if you're beating people and not knocking over cones.

All I have gathered about skogging is that there is some mystical right way to do it which is never explained. It has been hinted that not 'eating s­hit' is how to do it correctly, however, Samoa goes on to counter this little tidbit of information with the fact that only he knows how to do it properly, and one must take lessons from him. Now, I learned how to do a lot of things from watching videos. I watched tons of local kids footy with my friends to learn how to ollie, kickflip etc. I watched the Adams' videos just like everyone else to figure out how to cross-step and other goodies, and I watched your various videos on skogging to learn how to skog. I know how to skog now.

To skog, I dress up like a mid '50s gypsy. Bright colors, weird loose clothing, basically hippy dress with harder drugs. I ride a slalom board, but I don't really pump it. Instead, I push really fast with my right leg. Then, I push really fast mongo. Then, I do some half-assed dancing move to go into switch, and I push really fast with my left leg. Then, I go to mongo and do some pushing there. By the end of all that, I start over, but not before making a complete ass of myself in front of everyone around me by flailing around like a diabetic asshole who refuses to take insulin.

It's all good getting 4 'different' ways to push. But please dont knock those of us who are only pushing one way. As for being 'goofy' for doing that and not possibly being able to skate at a '8-12mph clip' speed for any amount of time - that's bull.

I skate for anything up to 10 hours (have done 17) and keep a good old 10mph going with nutrition stops in there too. 150 miles in 17 hours is a fair ol' 'clip'

I think I would like the idea more if I knew I could take 'it' to any conditions. Flaling around like that on the flat smooth surface in the video is all good. It would be such a waste of energy on any kind of hill, road or rough surface.

I'm sticking with 1 or possibly 2 styles of pushing (shitfoot is for when the hills are brutal and the headwinds are gale force.)

And believe me, i'm all for the stoke of skating. It is my life. I just don't get the whole 'vibe' of skogging. Skating along on one foot, the other out to the side.
Not my cup of tea.

Distance is everything to me.

if you did it, yes, you 'd look like a diabetic flaling asshole who needs to take insulin

so in hopes to give some direction on the technque, the basics are simply this.

One foot placed on front of board or back with torso facing forward. Really doesn't matter unless you've got an IQ less than zero because which ever way you start, the lead foot goes to the back and alternates with the other leg during the skog. Mongo style becomes irrelevant and dissing it becomes a sign of severe tunnel vision. Skogging is therapy!
Gently push with the foot off the board and place on the board in front or back of the foot on the board while rolling.
The foot that was on the board first now becomes the pushing foot on the opposite side. While pushing with opposite leg, gently slide the foot on the board up or back from it's current position and repeat the process.
It helps to make a few pushes with the same foot before alternating.

Hope that clarifies the fundamentals.

Perceptions of how it should be done and the reality of it being done in different styles... are to each their own.

When going up hills, carves aren't necessary. that's common sense.

If everything looks like a nail, you anti-skoggers are just hammers!

Again, I never forced anyone to do what I do. But my heads on the chopping block because of my style. I do lot's of stylish things from snowboarding, skiing, racing motorcycles and speed rollerskating. I have fun at what I do and turn people on to the skog in person. Every skogging skeptic changes their tune when they meet me and see the force.

I suppose it's more fun to say it sucks than do it.

My take on skogging is that it's the best technique to use when travelling long distances in traffic. you gotta be on top of your game like riding split lane on a motorcycle.

As one friend observing these rants on the messageboard sez, "Chris, why are you arguing with these riffraffs, they are nobodies trying to be a somebody. You OTOH are a legend. Something they'll never be. Seems like the more clearly you describe your skog, the more they(bunch of punks) show disrespect. Shame on these tadpoles. If they knew better, they'd STFU. Just ignore them and let them pretend like they know something".

I find some credence in that but at the same time, I get the feeling that the hate is due to the inability to perform the skog. No biggie. Perhaps a razor fits their style.

Some skaters feel threatened that they'll be less kewl.
