Killer Man! Thanks mega for the vid...
I was out in SF this past summer on a business trip. So Saturday rolls around, I rent a car, head on down the PCH to Santa Cruz. I screech into the HMB Surf Shop and asked the dude where the Mavericks break was. He told me up at the cliff - but it's totally flat - it's a winter break - I was like DAMN!!!
Santa Cruz was GREAT - I rolled around town all afternoon - sidewalks were like glass. Boardwalk scene was really cool (crowded as hell though).
Then I asked in the local surf shop (the one right on the strip there) where the light house cliff is where all the surfers go. He told me how to get there so I took a ride up. Depspite the normal wave size - I stood there for at least an hour watching them tear it up. The waves were HUGE compared to what I am used to (East Coast R.I. waves) - anyway - just a normal day for them.
I went back to Half Moon Bay a month later when my wife joined me for my 2nd trip out there. I ventured all the way out to where the parking for Maveriks is (I followed the satellite things I have seen from my Billabong Odyssey DVD). I didn't make out to the cliff, knowing it was still not happening (it was Sept.), but I now know wherre the parking is! (How the hell do ALL these spectators park in the winter?)
Anyway - I WILL make it out there to watch the break in action some day. I talked to someone who stood there and watched once. He said it is totally nuts. And about a minute after the wave breaks, a huge ass gust of wind just pummels you - even standing way up there on the cliff. He said it is incredible.
I also heard on the news here that this year has been really REALY big. The whole west coast has experienced way bigger than normal swells.
(Purple Skunk was a TOTAL highlight of my trip too. That and carving up the EMB to and from Pier 39, and the empty finincial district at night - sa weet).
Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional...
