grip tape fun
Hey, I just re-gripped my deck over the weekend, and I decided to have some fun with it. I got some help with the design from my wife (she knows how to draw, where i don't), and I am really happy with how it turned out. Lets see what other people have done!

Re: grip tape fun
wow, that is some tight detail xxguitarist. it looks really nice.
as for how i did it... the hardest part was getting the glue from the old grip tape off. The deck still had the origional grip tape on it, and it was hurting. I used a blow dryer to heat the tape, and just pulled it off. However, this left quite the film behind. What i did to remove it was take some paint thinner and a cloth and rub it off. I was worried about going to far and taking the clear coat off the deck, so i didn't manage to get it all off that way. I tried a few household cleaners to try and get the last of the film off, and I ended up using comet. it worked, but next time i am just going to buy a cleaner designed for the job. I googled it, and read about something called glue gone, or something like that.
The design part was much easier. I got my wife to sketch out a few ideas, and choose the one i liked the best I had already traced the outline of my deck onto the back of the griptape, so she just sketch out the design we liked onto it. One thing to note is that the design you do on the back of the tape will be mirrored when you put it on the deck. Another thing you might want to do is sketch onto the paper where you commonly put your feet, and then try to keep your design out of those areas. I am worried about smearing the griptape when i move my feet, so that is what i did. we'll see how it works...
after that, cut it out with an exacto knife. I cut mine in progressively deeper lines, just to try to minimize the mistakes. Start out on long straight parts to get a feel for it before you go to the more detailed parts.
Finally take off the backing, flip it over and stick it on! depending on the detail involved in the design, I could see this being quite difficult as well. try not to push it down to hard till you are happy with the location. I was able to pull mine off a few times when the pieces weren't in exactly the right locations. we'll see how that affectes the final strength of the grip tape though.
That is what i did. If anyone else has some improvements, post them up!
the main thing is to just try it and see what it looks like. If you don't like it, go get another sheet of grip and try again.

Thanks... I am glad you like it, but i wouldn't go that far. If you see it in person, you can see the parts that don't look so awesome. For example, this was my first time cuttung the edges, and when you look they are pretty crooked.
As for riding it, I took it out for the first ride with the new grip, and it rode exactly like it did before the grip!!But I felt so much cooler!!
