Commuting again, car is dead...............
Yesterday, our old beloved car, a 1990 VW Golf, passed on....
Blew a cylinder and I think the block is cracked...
either way it's dead, beyond reapirs, it had a lot of problems...
So we'll be sans car for a while.
Today my wife had to walk to work, so of course,
I skated up with her and skated back home...
This is the first true commutng I've done a board in a long time.
I grabbed my Pool King Pirate with Indy 215's and 65mm 78a No Skools...
On the way home I just did some neighborhood cruising on streets that I
drive on but never skated.. I found some nice areas and treats...
In particular,
there are a couple of long alleys that have a nice grade to them, not too steep, but long, smooth and clean....
I'll be doing a lot of commuting now, I have a new appreciation for the commuter world of skateboarding.
This was my tasty wave of the day.

Re: Commuting again, car is dead...............
sorry bout your golf, i loved my '89 when i had it
I think you'll grow to love commuting, I put more miles on my longboards than I put on my car.
I live in an area now completely overrun by construction traffic delays and we have very little parking downtown (all of which you have to pay for). sometimes it's actually faster to skate, and let's not forget about gas prices. I had to renew my license plate a couple of weeks ago, and I walked out of our secretary of state (DMV) with a new license plate and a longboard, and people actually looked jealous.

Your alleys are nicer than my roads.

Re: Commuting again, car is dead...............
Wait a minute..
You mean I can just send my wife to work, then go skate all day?
Damn, I've had it wrong this whole time.

Well done. See how long you can survive without the internal combustion engine.
Cool, I have been regularly skating a mile to the bus stop, then 11 miles on the bus, then one more skating from the bus drop off to work. All skating is on decent pavement. I finally got over the stigma of caring what the collegues think. By the way, they all think it is pretty dang cool. Sweet sweet freedom at 38 years old.

I wish i could skate to school but here in hawaii the people building the roads dont like to put any extra pavement on the side of the road. its a perfect hill two if only there was a sidewalk

Re: Commuting again, car is dead...............
I'm 17 and haven't gotten my license yet so I use my board and the city bus to get around everyday. But like someone said above, riding now in Arizona is killer. It was 107 out today and it's only gonna get hotter. I'll probaby end up riding around in my boxers by the end of the summer if it's already 107 in the beginning of June.
Appreciate life.

Re: Commuting again, car is dead...............
that arizona heat sounds brutal. i skated a mile and half to and from school each way everyday this year. It was faster than driving most days, by the time you get to the traffic around school and dealing with pulling over to get out of finding a place to park. and there are 2 parking garages right on the way to school, so if i'm running say, 5 minutes early i would just go for a quick run before school

I agree...I live about a half mile away from school...I can get there in less than five minutes on my board, and since there's only one way into the parking lot, traffic sucks. It's faster to skate and I don't have to pay for car insurance. 8)

that setup he desribed sounds perfect for commuting. big wheels are slow off the push and slow up the hills. small wheels ftw. kicktails are also a plus...
samhell, here in vancouver we have alleys like that but with big banked driveways that are killer. one day i should take some pics of all the killer terrain we have apart from the downhill runs you are all used to seeing
hey yo son that's my name whats the word?

Re: Commuting again, car is dead...............
I ride 5 miles a day one way to work at an insurance company, and hang my board up in my cubicle. The ride home helps me get through most days at the office.

Re: Commuting again, car is dead...............
Thanks guys.. I'm, bummin, but getting to skate everyday is going to help
take the pain away. I've already lost a couple of pounds, and my gut is
melting away slowly....
Yeah, it's going to be awhile before we can even think about another car.
Stinkfist: Yep, just send her off to work, and go skate...
I work from home right now, so my morning commute is about
12 feet to the living room....
It's funny, because the drive to my wifes work wasn't much quicken than skating there.
We live at the bottom of a huge steep hill, once we get up that to flatter ground,
I'm sailing past cars sitting in traffic.. It' really is a free feeling...
And people tweak out on seeing someone on a 'LONG' board, a lot of smiles...
I went for a good cruise today, I've decided to use my Dregs Supertanker
as my commuter, it works perfectly for it..
I rode a few more good alleys today.
There are so many great places to skate
around my neighborhood, it's mind boggling.
Not to mention I live about a mile
from the infamous San Diego Coffeehouse Garage, and one of the craziest ditches is
just down the street.. I have no excuse not to skate everyday now.
And I can now officially say, I'm not supporting the Oil companies...
My gas is now Vitamin Water...
This one was really nice.

This one is short steep and sweet, I almost ran into the wall here.

This one right across the street from me, it needs to be swept, but it's still fun.

This is a street up the hill from me, very little traffic and very smooth.

This is the big hill we have to walk up to get out of the canyon.
It's Cypress Ave. So we call it Cypress Hill..
