Default Road Rash: Should I see a Doctor?

    Hey,

i got some pretty nasty road rash on my left leg three days ago. probably a second degree burn from the looks of it. i have treated the wound with antiseptics and let it heal dry and a nice scab has formed. the wound itself does not look infected. however my left calve is pretty swollen and the skin surrounding wound (5 mm) is red. i dont feel any unusual pain, its just the swelling and the slight redness.

what do you think? infection or normal for heavy road rash?

I think if you are asking, you should see a Dr., if only for your own peace of mind.

yep, might be time to see a doc.

i use neosporin and saran wrap with masking tape to hold it in place. change it 2 or 3 times a day for the first week and then go to regular bandages. its too late in your case to try this. the scab has already formed. worst part about road rash is getting all of the crud out of the skin abrasion. ain't too good at this so i use the neosporin stuff.

You don't need to see a doctor. I get road rash all the time (competitive cyclist) and as long as you keep it covered with neosporin and a few nonstick pads (if they do stick, wash at them in the shower with the shower head and the wound will soften, making the pad just sort of slide off with a little pulling) for about a week. The biggest mistake with road rash is letting it scab over too early and it keeps oozing/weeping. Use the ointment, and on the pain relief kind because that tends to make the wound weep even more. Its probably red and swollen because there is bruising under it as well. Try what I told you and if it doesn't improve in a week then maybe get worried...

Also, awesome way to keep nonstick pads on you without using tape or gauze, both of which don't really work anyways. Surgilast - Surgilast Tubular Elastic Bandage Retainer - Allegro Medical Supplies

You can find alternatives in Walgreens, Drug Fair, any pharmacy really.

edit: If I wasn't clear, ive had road rash swell up a cm off my skin because of bruising underneath. Just make sure you keep it covered for a long time, change the bandages routinely depending on how much the wound is weeping (if puss seeps through the bandages every few hours, change it that often), and you'll have less scarring.

i had a pretty big one on my leg too during the summer
i cleaned it everyday with rubbing alcohol, and then when it scabbed i just got some cream from the doctor to put on it.. to help it heal a bit better
left a big scar, but you cant really see it cause of the hair on my leg : D
i have pics of it too
    lets see yours!

    redness or puffyness= infection
you probably did not clean the wound well enough
if you have insurance see a doctor or hydrogen peroxide the wound a couple times a day till redness is gone.

dont be a wuss over some road rash. and dont post crap on sf whining about it...if it was worse than 'rash' you could call it something else like pavement cheesegrater effect and then maybe go see the doctor.

NEwho... sounds like an infection. clean the crap out of it (hydrogen peroxide and whatnot), if the puffy redness doesnt go away or reduce soon go see a doc.

because my calve is swollen. perhaps other people have experienced swelling after road rash and can speak from their experience.

SF is not your medical glossary. If you have questions or concerns about your injuries, consult your physician.
