I slide, and I heard somewhere that you should't slide with ceramics, is that true?

inb4 ninjas will edit post to make sense

Edit: Okay, whew. I wanted to be the first to say this for once. Ceramics are not worth it. Abec 9's are not worth it. As long as you take care of them you can ride just as well on 5$ bearings as on 25$ ones. Or 100$ ones. The Abec rating system doesn't even apply to skateboard bearings, or inline skates bearings. Engineers use it for heavy equipment and stuff but once you step on your board for the first time your Abec 9's will be far below Abec 1s.

Mile High Skates is where it's at, really(milehighskates.com). If you buy wheels there then the bearings come free. Damn good quality bearings, not trash. Personally, I prefer VXBs to even them(vxb.com). I'm the type of person who can't be bothered to ever clean my bearings, and the cheapass ebay 5$ shipped VXBs I got are rolling as good today as the day I bought them.

Another cheap, low maintenance option are DBS regular bearings. I've never ridden them myself, but I've heard good things.

Bones Reds are also good, though many people hate on them. If you want an official, skateboard, company approved bearing that comes with cool stickers and you are willing to pay an extra 10-15$ for that priviledge(sic) then get them.

In answer to the above post, sliding does hurt bearings, but you can do some things to prevent that. I'd say use bearing spacers but dbs ceramics have them built in. Mile High Skates wheels+bearing packages also come with them, but not VXBs, and not DBS. They're very cheap, and they'll make your bearings last a lot longer. Also, speed rings are preferable. Some trucks come with them, some don't.
Inconclusion, cheap bearings ftw. Now can we please have a mod close this thread before it turns into another Sector 9 Ceramics.

Re-edit: all nice and understandable now?

Read the newly edited post haha. Pirates have some nice anti-ninja techniques.

(that last sentence was sort of an inside joke)

Edit: I will continue to edit the above post. Adding more info every time. You're welcome.

Yeah, I knew that the abec system didn't really mean anything to skaters. So what would even be the purpose of buying 9's instead of say 5's.

    there is no point
you might want to look at builtins by abec 11. the have the spacer and speed ring built in to the bearing, makes changing wheels and maintaining them a snap, and they feel solid whatever you do.

The only purpose is to trick you, so they make more $$$.

Isn't an abec 9 bearing held to higher quality standards.

None absolutely. Plenty of skaters think that buying 9's will make you go faster than 5's, but that's BS. All the system represents is how precisely made the bearings are. Abec 10's (maximum) are really precise, and thus cost more to manufacture than Abec 3's. But again, all that precision is only really useful in machinery, and is wasted on us skaters.

Materials are much more important than Abec rating, and condition of the bearing is more important than materials.

Edit: Ninja'd, but my reply still stands.

I'm riding 7's right now, so you suggest to not change a thing? The reason why I want ceramics is because my friend's board has them, and it rides like a champ. His pushes last for wayyyyyy longer than mine do, and his board hauls ass.

It depends. How long have you been riding your bearings? Have you ever cleaned them, and do you know how?

Clean steel ball bearings are almost no different from clean ceramic bearings. So similar that only professional racers and the like would notice a difference. But any kind of bearing requires maintenance. The bearings I've suggested require less of it thanks to superior rubber shield systems.

I feel like such a hypocrite. I never clean my bearings. Ever. Guess that makes me a noob.

I have probably 25-30 miles on them. I clean them regularly.

Do you see any kind of improvement in ride quality right after you clean them? And what company made them anyways?

Not really. They are just a generic brand that are rated 7's.

Thought so. Like I said, quality of materials is important. I recommend getting new ones, which brings me back to my first post.

    8 Skateboard Bearing:Sealed:ABEC-7:Ball Bearings:VXB
10$ plus shipping, and you should get spacers somewhere. Also Abec 7, but I think you'll see a serious difference in ride quality. I can vouch for these. The only reason I'm posting this link is because I can't find a better deal on ebay. I got my set for a fiver, but they're easily worth a ten.

    Mile High Skates

    Mile High Skates

Adds up to approximately 11$ plus shipping. Also great, and you get free stickers most of the time.

Daddies Board Shop ABEC 7 Skateboard Bearings

Khiro Aluminum Wheel Spacers 8mm x 10mm Set of 4

Approximately 13$ and I don't know this place's shipping policy. Probably plus shipping. Never tried, good reputation.

    Mile High Skates

Bones Reds. 15$ plus shipping, you can get them anywhere but I like promoting MHS. Good reputation except for those who hate them.

All these are of comparable quality. Again, I prefer VXB's bearings.

Check those links quickly, MHS links have a way of expiring. Going to sleep now. See ya.

ive road builtins and dbs bearings things ive noticed
builtins are awesome because of the ability to change wheels sooooo fast and cleaning thems easy they also rolled hella long right out of the..tube thing they come in
dbs bearings are great to but i deff notice a difference because the dbs's spin for like 10 seconds like even if there not tightened..at all with spacers but maybe its just me i do notice though that i have a very old pair of bearings my mom got me when i first starting longboarding like...lucky bearings ive road these for a zillion miles cleaned them for the first time in i swear a year or 2 yesterday and they spin forever so id imagine if you
"break in" a bearing by riding it a long time it may go faster just what i noticed
