Default Is longboarding easy to pick up/easier than skateboarding?

I have skateboarded but completely failed at it, and I want to try longboarding instead. Is it easier to learn, and is it faster to pick up? I dont want to do tricks, just cruise around my town. Also what board would you recommend thats good value and very stable?

you can do it. almost anyone can if they're willing to put in the time (cruise that is). stability is in the ankles and mind. i'd recommend getting a solid pintail topmount -- maybe a gravity or earthwing? A lot depends on your size, terrain, skating style, etc.

Since longboarding is simply a branch of skateboarding, it is no easier to pick up or learn since, quite simply, it is what it is.

Longboarding is as challenging or lax as you make it out to be.

Go to your local boardshop and put your feet on some boards, then make the decision for yourself based on what board felt the most comfortable.

Sector 9 has some good value decks such as the DH series or their classic shapes like the Goddess.

    Good luck.

Yes it's easier. But like park skating, your still going to need some balls to improve.

it depends how heavy the board is, and how good a grasp you have on it.

don't listen to people who try to make simple questions complicated. Longboarding is easier because you don't have to do any tricks or anything, all you have to do is ride.

Then just go for it. I'd never been on a board of any kind until about this time 2 years ago.

If you don't feel the need to do tricks or skate the steepest thing you can find, then don't
You said you failed at skateboarding. Was that your call or asshats you were trying to hang with giving you grief because you were not doing all the tricks?

If you're doing this for you, then get a board with the big, plush wheels and start cruising.
If you're worried about not measuring up to other's expectations or definition of skating, then go do something else.

I don't even leave my street most of the time and am happy as if I had good sense. No time schedule, no peer pressure, no 20 second rides down a hill and 15 minutes trudging back up, no ER trips from the popular mantra of pushing your limit to "improve".
If it feels good, do it. That is all.

Same thing if you ride a trick board. You don't have to do anything on any shape of skateboard if you don't want to.

Hell yeah man, it's easier. Anyone can skate! I've taught even my most ditsy friends in relatively short time.

But, you can push longboarding just as far as you can push street skating. There's always more that you can do with it.

A minute to learn, a lifetime to master!

I guess so, but a street deck is meant for tricks and really isn't fun if you don't do any.

Good points all around but one thing

Do more than just step on a few boards at a shop.

Watch some vids, ride a few friends boards if you can, hell, if you gotta show up to a session and explain your situation and see if anyone will let you check out their rides, if you dont have a bunch of friends with boards.

Im just sayin this because I used to ride kickers years ago and never really like it much, I just wanted to cruise, like you stated. About three weeks ago I hastily bought a big ole Sector 9 pin tail for just cruising then spent some real time on it a realized it wasn't what I really wanted. I got lucky cause I got years and years of construction work under my belt and all the tools and know-how I needed to chop my pintail into something else that better suited exactly what I wanted to do.

Just don't jump in to quickly and hastily buy something you might regret later, unless of course, that is you got the $$$ to go throwing around on another setup in less than a month after buying your first.

longboarding is as easy to pick up as street skating initially is.

in the words of lupe fiasco "kick, push, coast." that is the most rudimental thing you have to be able to do.

if you can push around and coast already, then doing it on a longer board with bigger softer wheels will come naturally to you.

How fast you pick things up depends on you and how much you love it and how much time you want to devote to it.

I found that being on a skateboard was just not fun, requiring too much pushing because of the high duro wheels picking up EVERY LITTLE BUMP in the street. I took the dive and picked up longboarding and never looked back. It's just a totally different feeling going down a mild hill, feeling the breeze, and being in your own little world, while carving it out.
