Yea I know, but overall it's not everyone's 'favorite' brand.

I guess what I'm saying is, I wouldn't try to shave off too much money, you really do seem to get what you pay for. If it takes an extra week or two to save up and buy a nicer overall complete, that's probably not a bad thing, rather than spending money to upgrade a board after you buy it.
You might wanna check into some of the smaller builders, Roggs Widowmaker I have heard some good things about, plus it looks totally sick which doesn't hurt. $130 for the deck really isn't bad at all, it is a speed board, and at his weight it might even have just a touch of flex, though it is built to stiff.
I think my next purchase is going to be a Roggs Widowmaker, Randal RII 180s 42* baseplates, Orangatang In-Heats, Bones Reds, and more than likely some venom eliminators all around.
I didn't buy the tools and whatnot with my first, and I don't think he is either. And well I wouldn't call it the most expensive that I'm going to buy, I paid ~$200 for mine and I may upgrade after a while of having it / want to try something completely different, like an evo.

I think after everything I bought, pads included and everything I spent about $350-$400. But I bought a couple different duros of bushings, skate tool, knee/elbow pads, helmet, made slide gloves, extra sets of hardware, spacers, bearings, speed rings. The good news is that I have less stuff to buy for my next board. All in all, I think I'll only buy like 2 - 3 completes for the forseeable future, and just swap decks and wheels around.

still concave my man. it's not a flat deck by any standard but ur right in that it's not shaped like a "u". the OP said they're used to riding a shortboard and like it's concavity. and i'm pretty sure that a dervish's concave-ness is more that a normal shortboard's, so i thought it'd perhaps suit his needs in that respect

lol the dervish's concave isn't close to a shortboards
I'd say rayne's tub concave is close
honestly though the dervish has hardly any concave at all

Yea that's good. I bought the s9 as a complete, here are the specs:
FEATURES:
# Length: 37.75”
# Width: 10" (widest point)
# Wheelbase (inside): 28”
# Flex: Stiff
# FLUSHMOUNT DROP THRU DESIGN
# FITS GULLWING CHARGERS AND TRACKER FASTTRACKS 180MM ONLY
# Die-Cut Black Grip Applied By Sector 9
And to the Dervish discussion, once again guys, look:
Even if it does have it, it sure as hell isn't enough.
or a kebbek smoothcut, if you can find a store that still has them in stock.
just a thought. this way carving is still possible.
DH race is really narrow unless you have size 7 shoes, when I went to test it my foot kept on sliding off. I wear size 11 shoe, so thats probably why it keeps sliding off.

the dh race is 8.5" in width so idk how ur foot keeps falling off unless your using it wrong. I wear a size 10-11 too and my foot never falls off....the griptape on it is fine. If ur in a pumping or carving stance where your feet are more positioned like a skateboard then MAYBE i could see your foot falling off if ur tht bad but for DH #### there shouldnt be a problem and rarely is

The dh race is one of the top boards for dh IMO.
i still dont like the shape. and the drop angles are really sharp, I was doing pendys and standups down a hill, and it just wassnt working for me. Drop deck just feel kinda weird, I guess that because Ive never actually ridden a good one, I prefer topmounts or dropthroughs, lots more foot space.
Plus I found it kinda cramped to tuck because of my long legs on the DH race, I couldnt really get a full Euro tuck going, it was more of a sh!tty euro mixed with a weir american. Id still rather have a 10" wide board that an 8.5".
8.5 is only about an inch to half and inch bigger than a standard popsicle, just not enough foot space. its just easier to stay on when theres more space to put your feet.IMO.
In addition might I add that it weighs a TON!!!! THAT DECK IS ONE OF THE HEAVIEST ON THE MARKET!!!!!
anywase, enough arguing about DH race, I dont think its whats best for our little friend here.

Landyachtz is one of the top ten DH boards without-a-doubt. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean it isn't what you call "good."I guarantee more people love it and like it than hate it so much id put money on it

no ####, it's what makes it so stable and AMAZING at high speed DH

Re: My friend is in need of his first board [Detailed Thread]
I don't mind lol. I'm not super nooby, just thought I'd get specific suggestions on an exact board that'd be good for him instead of me telling him what I think, as I'm not exactly pro
Re: My friend is in need of his first board [Detailed Thread]
Sector 9 sand wedge is also a good option
Its got a a good concave that you would like i think its 38.5" long with drop through trucks (Covered in tape) and its a good board i think the complete comes with sector 9 sidewinder trucks which are sweet for carving.

sidewinders are nice. i own a pair. however I feel like I can get just as much turn from R 2 with the right bushing setup. I feel that if the sidewinders are the only reason you want to buy the board then don't get it. Buy the sidewinders separate. that way if you don't like them you can sell them and not have a cheap sector nine board lying around.

Re: My friend is in need of his first board [Detailed Thread]
could you put some 215 indys on the top level of the sidewinders???
that would be such a sick carve set up, and maybe some super soft bushings?
I gotta get me some and try it out

Re: My friend is in need of his first board [Detailed Thread]
Well he's rode my Kommi and really likes it, and ridden some other boards. One that's somewhat skinnier with the opposite of concave [I forgot the name] and one that's basically an Evo. He didn't like either of those as neither had sufficient concave, but likes mine - so he knows he wants a longboard and he knows he wants concave.

ok well get him something with decent concave to his liking (even if its not the best) see if he likes it and go from there. Nothin wrong with havin more than one board...different applications for diff boards (that should be flipped around lol)
Set er up with some Randal 42 degree baseplates, either Paris or Randal hangers, venom eliminator bushings, and probably some Otang 4Prez wheels. You'd have a pretty sick first DH setup. I'd suggest ordering from Muir if you are getting a complete, because they offer lots of free upgrades. MHS is another great place for custom completes, though he doesn't have any Rayne in stock.
