I recently traveled on Alaska Airlines from orange county to seattle. They simply did not care and I had my 41" dropdeck as my carryon. I put it wheels up in the overhead storage so more bags could fit on top of it. No problems at ALL!

Buffalo to San Diego via Philadelphia with US airways : nobody said anything to me, I carried on my Landyachtz dragon 39 with indys 215 and soft wheels AND my backpack with my leathers, sleeping bag, and clothes for a week (not the smallest backpack).
anybody ever travel jetblue? i called ahead and asked about bringing skateboards in the air and they said it had to be 26" or less but i had no bags big enough to fit my dervish in
Hey I just traveled from New York to New Orleans with my Loaded Darvish. I was taking a cheap us air flight that had a connecting flight both ways. When I took the first set of flights I checked my burton role bag ($25 fee, j&rks) and just took my darvish (fully assembled) as my carryon. No one from security to the cabin crew said a word about it, and it fit neatly in the over head compartment. On the way back I took both my rolling bag and my assembled board on the plane and didn't have any problems at all on any flights.
Boards that are roughly 42" and less will fit neatly in most overhead compartments. I would suggest being early to queue for boarding so you have first pick of storage space.
P.S. the Burton Wheelie Flight Deck Role bag will roll with you while your skating. I think it even has skate bearings in the wheels.
