Longboard Buyers Guide. >>Newbie Resource Guide<<

Hey guys,

I'm kinda new here on the forum as well as to longboard skateboarding.

First I'd like to ask what do you guys think about these two complete, would that worth the money?

I'm from Hungary and the cheapest complete you can get (from Austria) costs something like 300 - 350 bucks Therefore I'm about to buy some boards on eBay or the internet.

I weigh 230 lbs at 6' 2" and looking for a complete that is under 200 bucks including shipping. I don't want anything special with my future complete just ride and have fun. No special tricks or signing up for downhill competitions and such, just carving.

Im just gettin into longboarding and i think i found a set up that im gonna like but i wanna hear some veteran opinions about it. Here it is:

Sector 9 29.5" Joel Tudor Signature deck with 150mm Randal RII trucks, and 66mm 80a Retro ZigZags Lime wheels.

Im pretty much only gonna use this board to cruise to campus and ride around my neighborhood. Im just gettin into longboarding so i dont see any sliding or downhilling anytime in my near future. Im looking more for a shorter board that i can easily carry around (hence the 29 incher), and something that i can turn quick and sharp to avoid people in my way. Also the surface ill be riding in is pretty rough...it has a lot of good size cracks in it.

I think i might have what i want, a short board with trucks (and a little rolling tray cut out) that will turn easily and quickly and some 66mm 80a wheels that are big and soft enough for the rough surface

I was also looking at the Ladera Surf n Turf for my deck as well.

Might wanna go for a better-known brand. Deck might be fine on those two, but the trucks look a bit sketchy. You can find a bunch of decent economical boards on ebay (S9, Gravity, Arbor, etc) - or if you're just looking for an internet site - check out milehighskates.com or one of the others that advertises on the 'Fish (stoked, daddies, muir, longboardskater - I've ordered from all of 'em).

Im new to the longboarding scene so i need something easy to ride, i live in a desert town with lots of hills, few sidewalks, and some rough streets. Im 6ft and 200-210lbs so i need a good board to support me. I wont be doing and hardcore stuff, just cruising maybe carve down a hill now and then. Ive been looking at the Landyatchz 41.75" Cruise Green. If anyone has any input it would be awsome, thanks.

What kind of budget ya on? What kinda rough spots you talking about? Bad sidewalk-crack style, or gravel, or bad pavement? Bigger and softer wheels will help w/ the rough spots quite a bit. My 76mm 78a Gumballs eat up the bumps pretty well, tho I go even bigger for my commuter - 85mm 78a Speed Vents. A Kracked Skulls Scimitar would give you big-wheel options and is a great board for getting into the sport - and it also has the upside of being very economical.

My budgets under, or around, $200 i think. and more sidewalk cracks and bad pavement than gravel, maybe sand across the road depending on the time of year. ive read alot of good things about the Kracked Skulls Scimitar so might go with that one

Hey this is my first post..and I'm lost. My friends got some longboards in some store, and I am too lazy to get one of them and have them show me where it is so I searched longboards online. I found this site and then found out that there is ALOT more to longboarding than I thought! I am a 6' 150 lb. skinny boy who has no idea what kinda board to buy. I won't be doing any hardcore sliding, but it'd be nice to learn to do some tricks eventually. My budget is around $200. Also The place I live in Texas, there aren't too many hills, so I don't need the FASTEST board, although I don't want to be helplessly speed wobbling if I do find some nice hills to go down.

Can anybody recommend something to me?

hey im new to this sport i spend most of my time extreme ironing and snorkeling, but i decide to give longboarding a try. What kiond of board should iget. moey is not an issue, paris hilton is buying me this as a borthday present. i want a board that rides kinda like my surfboard. what should i get, how long should it be, what kind of trucks and whels should i get. dont fool with me or ill call up bruce wayne and tell him tocome get you.

I'm use to riding around on a Sector 9 Sand Wedge. Does the Uluwatu, Bamboo Fish or Bamboo Pin ride very different?

Oh also I'm around 170-180 pounds and 5'11".

This will be the first board I buy so I'm kind of hesitant on spending the cash for a board and not liking it.

I need advice on what board to get. My main use for my next board would be for going down moderately steep hills and doing lots of carves. I would also like the board to be somewhat useful for some old school skating (360s, stuff like that), so it would have to have a tail and be on the smaller side. I also like a lot of grip so I don't slide out on carves, I heard the 75a tunnel rocks are good but are there any other suggestions? Thanks.

Well, I'm not really a vet, but I do own a Sector 9 JT that I use for campus cruising, and it is awesome. The only thing I would say that since the surfaces you're riding on are rough, I would try to get some 70mm wheels (but not bigger because of wheelbite).

i've been longboarding for 10 or so years but i've never skateboarded. i've been thinking about getting a longboard that i can ollie with.... i dont plan on doing anything to intense... i want the a longboard feel and i hate wheel bite... i was thinking about a board like this or something similar. I've got a s9 thats basically a bigger street deck. 37" x 9" twin tipped. i can even kickflip it.

i read the whole guide and it was really helpful to understanding what does what. but it made it seem like a board with 2 narrows ends is a bad thing? i am a begginner and am thinking to buy like a sector 9 pre built board. im 5'6 190lbs (yeah im fat wanna fight about it?) what length should i be looking at. according to the guide im obviously shorter than alot of people so 42" would be the max so would i be looking at more like 38"? i want to carve so i dont get too fast where i break myself... so basically what im saying is i want a nice all around board

The cut out nose and tail are less structurally sound ... but not by that much. As you look around there are hundreds of designs featuring a cut out nose and tail.

You have absolutely no shortage of great options for boards. Here's a list of a few to get you started.

• >Gravity Hyper Carve 47'< A good solid all around choice, with a focus on carving.
• >Sector 9 Padang (swallow tail)< A decent start, nothing flashy.
• >NeverSummer Concept< Kinda unique shape with tip and tail protectors.
• >Ladera Bonny Bomber< A good pintail shape
• >Earthwing SuperGlider< or >SuperCharger< very respected design and boards, unique shape with kick tail
• >Bustin Complex or Cigar< Unique shapes and the option to customize your graphics

I got a Bustin Complex as my first board, and it has served me well. The shape is very unique and seems to make it more obvious were your feet go. I have done almost all forms of riding on it and it has excelled. Any and all of those boards will serve you well. Remember to wear your helmet and relax. Being tense will make you fall. Other than that go ride!

Also it is the hill and gravity that make you "fast" not the board so move progressively up the hill till you can take it with confidence.

I got impulsive and bought a longboard before I even did any research. Now I am 220 dollars poorer, and one longboard richer. It's a landyachtz, and luckily it seems like I got a good buy.

Anyways, this site looks wicked helpful. Glad to be here. I'm a complete noob though so I'm gonna need help
