Brand new to the concrete ocean..
So recently I got 2 pinch flats on my car and couldn't get em replaced till the weekend. Figured "eh what the hell, I've got legs..". Looked at the wall in my apt with my bike and my inlines and realized, I can ride damn near anything with wheels, except a skateboard. So off i went and picked up a complete from 9 lives, my local skateshop. Here I am 2 weeks into skateboarding and after riding my sisters girlfriends layback longboard she bought 1 week after I picked up my chocolate..and i'm hooked. I need a longboard. A good friend of mine from AZ told me I should check out LandYachtz and Sector9. I'm leaning towards picking up a LandYachtz switch, but i'm still green to all of this, anyone mind pointing me in the right direction? Chiefly i'm looking for something to commute and carve with. Any suggestions? I'm 6'0 @ 190lbs if thats of any help.

Landyachtz really is a great choice for longboards, they make quality boards.
however, you should check out some of the sector9s aswell. i think they might run a little cheaper, but they are still awesome boards. maybe the godess by sector9 would suite you. do a little bit of reasearch to see what you like best too.

I am also new to longboarding, and have a Landy Switch on the way to me. got hooked up in an awesome way by a forum member. If you haven't been already keep surfing the fish, the dudes here have an awesome amount of helpful info and i've learned a pile of stuff before even getting my own board hahaha. can't wait till my Landy Switch lands next week.

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
Some killer completes at MileHighSkates right now, you might wanna jump on that Earthwing Boomerang. I think he's only got 1 maybe 2 left.

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
Thanks for all the suggestions, also been looking at the Loaded Dervish and the LandYachtz Battleaxe among others. I really am not sure what the style is that has cutouts above the wheels but I definitely am more intrigued by them than anything else. One thing I am a bit worried on is how far the Dervish and Battleaxe flex, i'm assuming I'm not gonna drag the center of the deck while riding but never the less just wanna make sure cause it would be a hell of a shame to finally get a nice deck and start shaving parts off of it.

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
So I'm torn between the Loaded dervish and the Landyachtz BattleAxe. I'm stuck between the two and not sure what hardware I should be looking at for either. Wheels especially seem to be a bit perplexing, i'm assuming I should go more for something grippy and soft?

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
for just cruising and commuting I'd get 50* paris trucks with purple orangatang inheats on whatever board you get (unless it's a topmount, then get orangatang 4prez)
also, get the switch, the low platform lets you get the most out of each kick.

Does the lower height really make it that much easier? Would i have probs bottoming out if I went up the inclines in sidewalks, speedbumps etc?

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
I've heard some really good things about the BC Eel (BC Longboards Eel Complete - BC Longboards - Completes). Essentaly a dervish that gives you a complete for the cost of just a dervish. If you go with that you might want to check whether or not it is the stiffer flex. If you want to get a stiffer board, look at the Sayshun Polar/compass (LongboardSkater.com: Sayshun Longboard Skateboards). I really love my Polar, but it is a bit heavy.
Sayshun Polar-Randal 180 (81a eliminator top, 85a barrel bottom)-wheels ever changing
Fun House Ticket Puncher turned schlongboard- Bennett 5.0 (one huge mishmash of bushings)-Lemon BigZigs
Mystery Model-Randal 180(to be dial in)-Cult Death Rays

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
Get bearing spacers.
You don't need the bearing cleaning kit. You are better off getting a skate tool.
Go to Wal-Mart and pick up a can of Brakes Parts Cleaner for 3 bucks and then find Remington Teflon based gun oil in a little clear bottle for 3 bucks as well. That's all you really need for bearings. There are some bearing lube threads on SF so feel free to use the search tool. I personally use White Lithium Grease, but I wouldn't suggest that for above 45mph because I haven't tested it above that.
I also suggest Randal R-II's.

As you were posting this I literally found this thread. Cleaning wise I have everything i'd need from my job kinda just thought the bones kit was handy but valid point. Got a skate tool from my local shop yesterday, best $10 I've spent in a good while. Out of curiosity, why would you suggest the Randals over the Paris'?

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
My board came in 1 day early, however on my ride home it began to rain and I'm not sure if I should keep riding it until I clean and lube the bearings. The closest thing I have to oil would be zippo lighter fluid, and cleaning product wise I have Simple Green and Alc. Should I hold off until tomorrow and buy some oil?

Re: Brand new to the concrete ocean..
riding in the rain for 10 minutes or however you rode probably wont kill your bearings. if its pouring my the gallon and you rode through it, then yeah go and clean them.
people say better safe than sorry, but thats just my two cents.
Ask me about my Holesom.

it was around 10 min or so but i went through one puddle at the end of a crosswalk that crested over the wheels. They still spin fine with no noise so I'm assuming all is well.

This.
Better spend a half hour cleaning your bearings then spending a couple seconds getting to know Mr. Asphalt when your bearings seize.
