Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
I know a lot of people swear by the legendary gnome, and I plan on picking one up soon. Plus, the finishes are just beautiful.
As for the tail, they may be able to do something custom to fit your preference.
The decks base price is only $40, so its another thing to consider.
You may also want to consider the Legendary Merlin, (Its a little longer).

Earthwing Superglider (38" with tail). Some indy 169's (even better mhs hybrid 169s) with 66mm wheels. Keep it low.
EW Supercharger (1st Gen)/ Prandal 180/ Powerballs
EW Widerglider/ MHS Hybrid 169/ EW Road Rages
Loaded Dervish/ Randal 180/ Potang 4 Prez
Rayne Hellcat/ Crails/ Lime Bigzigs
Demonseed/ Randal 180/ Lime Bigzigs

Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
gravity carve 39, randall/indy/tracker 150 and some soft 66mm wheels (66mm zigzags, strikers, otang fat frees.)
Most fishes swim in schools, but mine swims in pools.

Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
The Legendary minis are great for carving, but from my experience with my Merlin, the tail is pretty much useless. You can't really kickturn all that well.
Instead, look at the Landyachtz Pocket Knife Landyachtz - Boards
Or for something less pricey maybe the Element Hog
Element Element 30" Hog Complete - The Longboard Store

Kebbek Steve Daddow - indeesz 176mm - 81a Flashies
EW Bellyracer - Bear 1052s - Venom Cannibals
Five Mile A-10 Warthog - Bear Grizzly 1052s - 76mm Racecore Kryptos

Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
I'm in the same boat looking for opinions in the 33'' to 38'' range... my contenders consist of:
Comet Ye Old Cosmic Shred 35''
Rayne Timeline (no kick)
Apex 34 (no kick)
Gravity Larry Bertlemann
Gravity Logan Cruiser
Landyachtz Ripper
I was real set getting a topmount with a kick but the Apex 34 and Rayne Timeline are really questioning that for me. I feel like the Apex 34 is easy enough to manny up and down and to do shuv it's without the kick even. Hope this helps.
EDIT: From experience I can tell you that the Loaded Fish and Ceviche are a real hit or miss. I've heard rave reviews and then some not so good reviews. Really need rave reviews if your going to be dropping that much bank IMO.

Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The Legendary minis look good, especially the Merlin. And I agree that while the Rayne Timeline and Apex 34 don't have a tail, they definitely look worth considering. Construction on both sounds great, and I very much like the shape of the Timeline.
While I was checking out Landyachtz' site I saw the Drop Hammer, which looks really nice as well (despite not much tail). Any thoughts on that board?
And yeah, the Loaded boards do look really good for me, but including shipping, I'd be looking at $400 to get one to me (I'm in Australia), so they'd need to be really good!

Check out stokedskateboards.com for the Loaded boards. It is the cheapest place I have found for the Ceviche and Dervish. I don't know if they ship overseas or not but it is worth a try. If not I am sure that some of the other well known sites will ship to ya.

Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
if your going to get a croc, dont get the croc 3 series, the extra $60 isnt worth it. the $80 original croc is a good deal on a beginner board
Ask me about my Holesom.
Tactis Sk8 Shop
Holesom SS = Brown Randals+Ambers
Voodoo Doll = Real Indy's + 80a 4Pres

The Fish/Ceviche are very love/hate. You'll either shred it or throw it in the bin. Don't buy one of these without trying one out first or at least standing on one in a shop! You may be a Ceviche lover or a Ceviche hater! Plus for the money it's a big risk...

Re: Smaller carver-commuter board?
Find the Soda Factory thread and check out the Bar Hopper.
It's 39" with a really useable kick tail. Mine's set up with Hybrid 169s and OJ III wheels.
It's a great set up.
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?
