Well I saw a few factory dropped Vannys a few years ago. Loaded was selling them on their site Xmas of 07 in the seconds section.
It looked to me like there wasn't a lot of material where the nose should be. Too fragile looking. In fact, they recommended if you purchased one to use a nose guard and some support around the mounting holes. So...I can imagine your friend should do the same thing.
