Is sliding on a top mount going to be different from a drop thru?
Im just asking because i want to expand my quiver and all the boards i've owned since learning to slide have been dropthrus, and i just want to know if there will be a huge difference between getting a topmount to slide compared to a dropthru.

It's going to be a little harder but will feel better.
Watch out for high siding.

is harder to slide in general, or just to brake into the slide?

Re: Is sliding on a top mount going to be different from a drop thru?
topmounts will grip better. so they will be harder to initiate into a slide.

The main diffrence with top mount sliding is that the board will tip over easier versus a drop-thru. You just have to make sure you keep all 4 wheels on the ground distribute your weight smoothly.
To better understand this, step on the side of a skateboard. Apply weight until the other side of the board lifts, lifting the wheels off the ground. Drop-thru's won't tip as easy.
You shouldn't have a big issue with a bit of practice.

lower center of gravity on the drop through = less traction = easier slides.
top mount is the opposite

How does a lower center of gravity equate to less grip?

When you lean on a topmount, your weight is distributed more to the side you're leaning.
Which means there's a lot of friction on two of the 4 wheels, and less on the other two.
When you lean on a dropthrough, your weight is more evenly distributed over all 4 wheels. Which means there's less friction on all 4 wheels = easier slide.
Also, since dropthroughs are lower, it's easier to kinda "push" the board out in front of you when sliding. This applies to and lowered deck.

Re: Is sliding on a top mount going to be different from a drop thru?
So it's basically opposite to cars? How much would a 1/2" riser have on sliding if everything else was the same?

Re: Is sliding on a top mount going to be different from a drop thru?
you can't think of longboards as cars, cause cars do their own turning with no outside forces. longboards turn with external forces from the rider. riders push laterally on longboards to slide them, so a higher top mount would want to roll over, where as a lower deck would be more inclined to slide.

.
thats not true.
When sliding a top mount board, you as the rider are above the wheels. Therefore, you need to use vertical force to push something sideways, which is a difficult task.
On a drop through board YOU as the rider are lower, but the wheels are in the same place as they'd be on a top mount board. Because YOU as the rider are lower, you are able to exert much more horizontal force (as opposed to vertical force) on the wheel, thus making it easier to push the wheel sideways.
Also, @DBHM, a lower center of gravity does not necessarily equate to less traction. In fact, I don't think it has anything to do at all with your traction.
EDIT: as for the riser question: You would be higher above the wheels, therefore it would be more difficult.

Re: Is sliding on a top mount going to be different from a drop thru?
the "topmounts grip better" is a general rule. a lot of it comes from the complete setup. my topmount with indys and radiused 4 prez drifts easier than my buddies drop through with randal style trucks and round lipped wheels.
TINKERING WITH YOUR SETUP IS HALF THE FUN OF BOARDING.

if you want the best grip you should get a landyachtz dh race and flip it upside down. it will also allow you to see further ahead

Well I don't want to hijack this thread if it seems to be going that way.
