Putting big wheels on small deck
Okay, I've searched and found a couple of posts about shlong boards, but none answered my specific question or they just used too technical of language for me to understand.
I'm completely new to long boarding, and FOR NOW I just want to get around campus. I used to skate short boards (you know, kickflips ollies rail grinds etc). Before I run out and buy a new long board, I want to try and turn my old mini into a cruiserish thing. I want 65mm wheels, and around 80a rubber softness...thing.... Im also putting on softer bushings so my destructo trucks can actually turn.
My question is this. I DONT WANT TO PUT THE TRUCKS ON THE NOSE, like I know many people do. I just want to keep normal trucks and placement. What size risers would I need for these 65mm wheels? If any... (I was thinking 1/4 inch?)
Thanks

I'd go for 3/8"
I have a bunch of skateboards
Isn't this what you're supposed to put in a signature?

with only 65mm, 1/4" risers should be fine as long as your not carving like really really hard. you can also use angled risers if you want to get better turning leverage

Re: Putting big wheels on small deck
try wedging it too so those trucks will actually turn

Thanks all.
Are wedged risers more expensive?
Also, what do you guys think about putting long board trucks on a short board?

No they aren't, unless you're paying for brand names.
You could put longboard trucks on it, but most people would still probably use a conventional geometry (ventures, indys,etc...) truck.

Re: Putting big wheels on small deck
So if I wedge, how much of a wedge should I add? Anything too much would make it WICKED high off the ground, no?

Re: Putting big wheels on small deck
+1 for wedge risers. The way they adjust the geometry helps prevent wheelbite too.
You could use moderately bigger trucks, but imo, you current trucks will be fine. Unless you have a wider deck, wider trucks will be harder to get leverage over.

I think I might go for the angled wedge over the softer bushing.
What do you mean +1 wedge though?

He just means that he supports the idea of wedging.
A standard wedge like this will do fine for you.

66mm gravity burners are great cruising wheels! good price, as well. MHS sells them with free bearings and spacers

Thanks, GREAT CALL! I like this site. BUt what do you think of the Earthwing Freeriders? I kind of want yellow and red to match my board. BUT Id prefer a better board over aesthetics, and blue gravity burners wouldnt look too bad.

gravity urethane (wheels) are quality, but earthwing will be higher quality
Nothing at all wrong with the freeriders

Re: Putting big wheels on small deck
Many decks may not support larger wheels with the supplied trucks without a large amount of riser.
I don't know what deck you have or trucks. bit you may be better off with some smaller 60-63mm wheels.
Angled risers tend to give a bit more wheel clearance than equal sized flat risers.

Re: Putting big wheels on small deck
THANK YOU EVERYONE. This has been great. Really helpful. First post, and I got everything I needed.
I'm going with the freeriders (even though they are 70mm) with the wedged risers. Hopefully I'll get enough clearance, and if not I'll do some cutting, or I'll return em for the 65mm. I'm also getting bushings (medium) which were much cheaper at this MHS site. Plus it has free shipping...sick!
My Mini is going to cruise and look good while doing it. I'll try to post a picture when its all done.
Thanks again

try some 56mm superballs too! stoopid speed, no risers. made for small wheelbases, speed for big skateboarding!
