    Default Spacer Advice

This is the first time I've put in my own bearings, and I got some spacers too. Just wondering, when you're tighhtening up the wheel after putting all the stuff in, should you do it as tight as it will go, or should you leave it to rattle a little, like on shortboards? I ask because when I tighten it up all the way, it doesn't spin for as long, though when I leave it a bit looser then it spins longer. But surely leaving it loose defeats the purpose of the spacer?

Also, how do you go about removing the bearings properly (and without a tool)? That method where you jimmy it off using the truck axel seems like it could damage the bearings.

as long as you have spacers and washers you can tighten it down. Don't tighten it as far as it can go, have it so that there is no play.

If you tighten it as far as you go, you're kind of crushing your bearings...Which doesn't make them want to turn too well.

As george said, tight enough that there's no play, loose enough so that they can spin freely.

Hamkins, unless you're running Kryptos, or some obscure wheel with 8mm bearing spacing, you might want to try out Biltin bearings. You can tighten the nut so that the only play in the whole wheel is the difference between the axle diameter and the inside diameter of the inner bearing race (and you can't do much about that in normal circumstances). The Biltins make things very simple.

And if you're at all worried about an axle nut loosening, etc, you can crankd down on the Biltins like crazy and get zero compression in the system.
