Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
Well 1,000 miles is alot. So for me money would not really be that much of an option. But you are not me. Anyway is would most definitally go with a Rolls Rolls board.
Because:
Light - Carry up hills
Wide - Very comfortable
Low - Easy to push and very stable (and can ride massive wheels).
Holey Trucks:
Because they can turn very well, and since the Rolls Rolls is so low, they are very stable
They are very light
Bushings are your personal preference.
Wheels:
Abec 11 Flywheels. (90mm, 97mm, or 101mm)
Your preference.
Big wheels would be best to push less.
The 101's would be prime because they would weigh less than the 97's (just good luck finding them)
Bearings:
Rock'n Ron's Nuclear Missles
Because you are right, water would be less of factor (maintenance wise)

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
Drop-through earthwing with wheelwells on Indys with 70 zigzags and a spare set of rain wheels. Or a CF evo on kahalanis with bigzigs or powerballs if you're spendy. You want something very light, low, and able to handle hills.
Side note: Why on earth are you doing this? You're going to destroy your knees pushing a skateboard with a huge backpack.

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
I was actually just thinking about this last night. The setup I decided on (at 3 in the morning, so tell me if you think its a little off) would be:
Blank "Vert" Schlongboard (the vert models are usually longer and wider).
Randal Frankentrucks - because thats what I have on my schlong, and I know they can handle both low speed cruising and full tuck bombing - probably with something like khiro reds or blues
Cheapo Ceramic Bearings, probably from VXB or something - 2 - switch them out and clean every other week.
and 97 Flys.
also I would carry a thing of bearing cleaner and a Unit tool.
The setup was chosen not only for weight (a blank vert deck dosn't exactly weigh alot) but also for ease of attainability, familiarity with the products and the fact that even if I do break my deck in Minnesota, they'll still be a shop to sell me a new one for $30

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
I would go for a longboard larry drop pin. It has some flex which is comfortable for travelling and also the deck is dropped for easier pushing. However it is also stable on the downhill as it is advertised as a speedboard. From what I know it's not too heavy either. I would use holeys I think for their good cruising abilities. As for wheels, I would go with some of those oldschool 101 mm flys but if I couldn't get those I would go with 97mm or 90mm flys. Bearings, I would go with some rockin ron's ceramics. They roll forever and are less maintenance when they get wet.

you're gonna want some huge ass wheels for those flats. i heard that 130mm flywheels are coming out. you should give those a try.

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
i would go with:
evo
siesmic front truck
tracker back
90mm flys
bones swiss labrinth ceramics
then make fenders out of some plastic or something
not too expensive but you can bomb hills with it being dropped its stable and easy to push since there isnt much difference between your to feet hight when you push! its also turny. although big wheels are nice because they coast a long way they are harder to push to get started. think about gears on a bike. they are also nice because you can easily go over most all terain. i can go over train tracks when they go through sidewalks on my 90mm flys

LBL Old School Dancer- Its nice long and very cruisable on flat ground. you can also use it as a table in yer little tent
Holeys with red bushings- cuz the other guy used them
Swiss Ceramic- You will never have to clean them even when youre not on your journey
Momos- For the hell of it
If i am ever gonna do this trip of yours I would really just take my dingy cuz i dont really have any of the stuff i posted up there

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
Subsonic Swift 38, It's a pretty versatile DH/LDP board, as long as you adjust the trucks as such
Holeys- pumpable, durable, sexy, stable
Seismic Speed Vents in 83a, I think they are 75mm (These would be better for pumping the flats, you don't want to puch the whole way do you?)
Rush Titanium Ceramic Hybrids....they are great bearings, and you could buy 5 sets for the same price as Bones Ceramics
Good Luck on your journey!

how's he gonna go down a hill with an OSD?
eugene makes a good point with the shlong... if any of these other boards break for some reason, you're screwed. with that in mind, i'd bring one or two spare sets of wheels (one for rain, one for backup), bearings, and perhaps some axles.

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
i hav e to side with the guy that said a droped supercharger. its super light, and if u use droped trucks on it, will be nice and low. then ide get some big 97mm flys, and a set of rain weels. seramic barriong wswould also work.

Dropped deck with no cut outs+97mm flys would lead to some crazy wheelbite.

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
I second the ldp idea, I recently rode a subsonic pulse, so nice, I could go a thousand miles on that deck.

Re: Which setup for skating a thousand miles?
I don't really understand why everyone is going for 90mm+ wheels. Huge wheels are heavy as hell for pushing and anything over 70mm will be able to roll over road hazards.
