i think it's about riding down big hills just for fun, not racing, not worrying about how fast your going, adding some style etc. however i do think it's closely related to downhill

Riding down huge hills while taking advantage of as much pavement as possible, chilling and hanging with buds at speed, and having fun enjoying the ride

for me it would be the nice mellow hills that you can carve up and put some dancin into, basically the colton style is the epitome of freeriding for me.

I would define that as dancing. Free riding for me is expressive, creative riding that falls out of any defined catagory.

When I was in Ski Race camps as a kid the coach would often let us take runs between our drills, practice runs, and coaching sessions. He would say "Go take a free ski". For us it meant skiing fast, sneaking into the terrain parks (when they were snowboard only). We were just going nuts on the mountain and skiing any way that came to our minds to blow off steam. I think thats where the term Freeskiing came from in that sport.

And I think in skating it means the same thing. Just taking a hill and riding it in any way that comes to your mind in the moment that falls outside of defined diciplines such as DH, Slalom, Pumping.

I think before manufacturers started making hybrid speedboard/hard carving decks for experts and calling them "Freeride" they were calling them "carving" decks.

This is an incredibly general question. Nearly any longboard works.
34" Pickle by Koastal skateboards- Park, pool, ditches, pedestrian slalom
44" Handmade custom carver- Hills, thrills, (hopefully not too many) spills
55" Handmade custom dancer- Making the elderly ladies swoon
