Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
whats the purpose of having a board vertically laminated instead of regular sandwiching?
-
Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
aceckles - the softer the better imo, but wheel hardness is always a very personal thing, so it depends on what you want.. but imo, i love a good 69a wheel if you can find one
Shrimfririceeeeeeeeeeeeeee: its a different flex pattern, and usualy used with different types of wood, like oak or bamboo, it works best to do it in vlam, but maple and birch usualy are done in hlam.. just all depends on exactly what you want the board to do, also can have an effect depending on where you put grain facing cross or long. I know that migh not be much help, but that is why they do that.. Most production boards that are vlam are bamboo

how about that core? is it some sort of foam or BB?
maybe this is more than a noob question, and maybe i am getting over my head for just my second build. but maybe i can handle it if i can find some pointers and get all the material.
would the press process be the same, or is this something completely different to get that concave on the cf extending from the "core"

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
you are trying to take on one of the most complex builds in your second build.. i am just starting to work on this sort of thing, and i'm on my 60 or 70th board now... good luck to you..
for this board, it appears to be a wood plat form, so where you stand is most likely bb or more likely maple, then a foam core to give shape to the carbon fiber, you want to now research the wefunk torsion box to learn how this reacts with the carbon and glass. So in essence you will first press a few layers of wood, but very thin, and then fit a foam core to this, and then whatever glass and carbon combination is needed to create the proper flex properties. and yes the carbon twill is what you want, though again, there is probably glass of some sort under there as well i assume. and you will need 2/3rds of a yard to make this since you need at least one layer on the top and the bottom. give it a try and see what happens, but you pull this off and you are ahead of me, i have not gotten a chance to play with different cores, and angling the carbon for different flex and stiffness. it is in the plans but i have not done it yet.
Good luck!!!

ahhhhh. research.. got my homework cut out for me. i'm gonna give it a shot. might go through a couple prototypes, so long as my cash can hold up through this project.
i'll let you know where i mess up at when i tackle this over xmas break.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
cool, i'm looking forward to seeing this, and there are a lot of theory's on how all this works.. keep us posted, and plan on spending some money, you are looking $100 for the first board in composites and epoxy alone possably. keep me updated, and i'll be asking you for pointers!!

I just peeled the tape from one of my decks, and have some sticky residue left in some places. Any recommendations for what to use to clean off the remaining glue? I usually use zippo lighter fluid to clean tape residue off of surfaces but I don't think that is the best idea for my wood deck

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
yeah, nothing that will take that stuff off will be great for wood, but it doesnt matter much. i've also used mineral spirits, it works ok.. simple green kinda works in consentrate. but probably go with googone or something like that

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
eipsalta - i use these in some of my boards and not in others. it is not necesary at all, but you will need to make sure those bolts are still tite about once a month. sometimes they can rattle loose, but it will take a month. i realy wouldnt worry about it. also, you can use rubber washers instead of cut up shock pads.
Bushings are completely a personal preference thing. I think those bushings will feel a bit stiff to you, but go with them and see what you think, but in grizzliez, you will always want an oversized bushings. so if those feel restrictive, try jimz blacks or whites, but i wouldnt waste any time or money on something like khiro's cause the bushing seat in those trucks is quite small and you will get quite a bit of slop

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
Hey hey hey! wussup. so me and my friends are building boards and i designed one with a bunch of curves. to draw the curves what is the best way to do it. what i usually do is make a 90* right angle and put points all along the lines. then i connect the lines in this wierd way i learned in geometry and after all the lines are drawn out, i have a rough curve. is their any easier way to do this???

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David

You mean like this?
-
Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
thats probbaly the best, I find that as long as its semetrical, it doesnt matter if the curve is completely consistant, and consistant curves also often are not the most functional for skateboards, so i free hand it on a pice of paper, cut it in half and use that for my inicial template. i have had the best results for that, but the thing shown above will work if you want perfect curves

i dont build but i would say for a 1st or second build to try to make that deck..then yeah you are probably in over your head.
