Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
cool thread.
Q: Is it reasonable to put reverse kingpin trucks on an oldschool-style shortboard?

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
i've heard a lot of people like that, but it will make it taller. I suggest trying riding indies just a little looser. they do carve like crazy, if you want just a carvy short board. But in any case, it definitly does work, and you can ride it in the park that way, but its weird

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
What is the general consensus on thumb pucks? Is it just personal preference? I was thinking there was the chance of hurting a thumb or scraping it up if it hit the ground, which I'm having trouble with now. Will an extra thumb puck affect anything a lot besides glove weight? And yes, I do realize I pretty much just asked the same question three times.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
chaunce: i dont really use my thumb puck, its more there for me just to have a place to put my thumb. but i suppose having it there and using it allows a bit more weight distribution which could result in a smoother slide. i skated without mmy thumb puck today and really felt no differrence.

Why can't Rayne put down the bong and make the same drop thru on my demonseed, the back actually has a different cutout then the front, and i had a few graphic blemishes and i payed full price! whats wrong with rayne, they NEED to do something different, and my computer is really slow, what do i do?

hamchuck360: so the back has a different cut out than the back eh? well first you might want to pick a front so you have one of each. than you should email rayne a bunch and figure out the deal with them. im sure they'll fix it up for ya sometime or at least give you some money back. and your computer is slow because it only has an iq of 75, just cut it some slack .

Just my experience.
Alrighty, thanks guys. Any ideas what to use for the thumb puck? For my gloves I currently have three corian tiles each, one palm and two for the fingers, and I was trying to think of something I could use for the thumb that wouldn't be too difference friction-wise. I think I'll ask my father if he has anything at his office we could cut the corian into smaller pieces with. Would this work? What would we need?
EDIT: I've been messing with my slide gloves, kneepads, and trick wheels on my board (38", a little long but it's okay) on extremely smooth concrete. I spent maybe an hour or two playing around trying to figure stuff out. Anyway, long story short, I could do stuff on smooth concrete, but when I went out to my driveway (it's on an incline, my house sits on a tiny little slope), took two steps, jumped, and landed on my knees, my kneepads didn't slide like I expected them to but instead hopped along the ground. I had taken my gloves moments before that so I ended up scraping my hands up a bit (well it was either that or smash my face into the ground).
So my question is, what's the problem here? Do they need to be "broken in?" Either way I'm gonna be scared to death to fall on my knees outside from now on..
Also, any advice with colemans? I was starting to get toeside 180's a little bit, but could not for the life of me slide at all when I leaned heelside! Should I just go out on a hill and expect to die a few times?
EDIT..again: Sheesh that turned out to be a huge post. I feel bad asking so much crap

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
yo dave do you have much experience with plastic board rails? I'm wondering whats the most common method of screwing them in. I have a set and used the screws that they guy at the skate shop gave me and the were meant to be drilled all the way through the deck and had a metal backing thing that stopped it on the other side. What do you see most?
I had already gripped my board so now i have these unsightly like metal rivet looking things on top of my board. it was my new slide deck too if you saw the thread, i was cringing putting them in haha. i'm thinking i'll probably go with something a bit less intrusive next time.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
chaunce: i think you could just use a small piece of corian for the thumb puck. i have that on a pair of my slide gloves and it works fine. if you want to make it smaller you could cut it down with a jigsaw with the proper blade. just go to ace and they will get you what you need.
and regular knee pads arent meant for sliding specifically so thats probably why you are having trouble with that. one thing you can do though is velcro some corian onto the pads where you want to slide and that will give you a good smooth slide. ive only used knee sliders twice like that and it worked fine for me. just be aware that if you fall really really hard onyour knee that you risk breaking the corian tiles.
colemans take a lot of practice. when i do any type of slide i make sure that i first have a really good foot positioning on my board that will allow maximum traction for my feet on my board. this will also help with getting good leverage on your back foot to allow you to push the board out. next thing is to make sure that when you go down for the slide you put a ton of preassure on your sliding hand. this will take less preassure off of the board and allow for a smoother slide. next take that other hand and throw it up in the air. kinda reach toward the direction you want to slide. use the momentum from that to start to force out your back foot. after that you should have done a 180. for going backlook the direction you want to go. then push out your front foot and suck in your back foot. practice this for a day or two and you will start to get it down

Im going to get a motion bigfish with bear 852's, and Im going to run 70mm superballs.
How big of a risers do you think I would need to prevent wheel bite on a loose setup?

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
chaunce: i either wrap mythumb with duct tape, and just reapply when it wears thru. or i melt a small piece of cutting board on to it.
same with knee pads.. just buy a 1/4 inch thick plastic cutting board, cut the chunk you want for your knee pads and melt it on with a blow torch. it works great.
Cameronisswell: 1/8th inch shock pads will probably do the trick.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
I dont have any tips besides that.. there are people that can do it. I suck at nosemanualing though myself. on a short board i can get 4 spaces doing a regular manual, but thats the best i got. definitly not one to comment on this one. but I think k-shizz is pretty good at that stuff, we'll see if he will chime in here
