Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
I'd venture to say that acceleration is one of the most important things in speedboarding

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
97 flys do technically have a higher top speed, but we will never reach that top speed because of too much drag, and not good enough aerodynamics. though what 97 flys are real good for is momentum. they have a lot of urothane on the outside, and a hollow core. on the right road they can be extremely fast. also the size is great on rough roads. that all being said, unless you have a strait long rough road, there are better wheels out there. exceleration is important, and is certainly the fad right now.. so 66mm offset wheels.. but you will notic that most racers like the happy medium of 75mm off set. you have a bigger wheel for some momentum, and still small enough to excelerate, as well as off set so it will corner better. also, reflex thane, or otang thane helps propel the wheel forward.

so bummed when i heard you broke your collar bone dave. was stoked to come back from europe and ride that hill with you on the account we never got to skate before i left.
question since i know you have a good amount of experience on this.
perks of a W-concave?

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
hodog... lookslike an old sector 9 to me.. any more detail than that is probably not neccesary, as it is an extremely simple pin tail. hope that helps.
kale.. or kole? : im bummed also man, we will skate next season.
w concave locks you in more than regular concave, if it is fit properly for your foot. it gives you a pocket for your heal and the ball of your foot to fit into. gives you tons of leverage to push against.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
Ok so I just ordered my first longboard (Dervish) and I'm still waiting for it. I was just wondering, how is uphilling on a longboard? I was skating up hill on a skateboard yesterday and it sucks.
So my question is, in comparison to a skateboard is longboarding up hill easier or harder. Is it better to just walk it up? And what are some ways you guys use to go back up hill after riding down. (Have a car and take turns ,etc?)

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
Iron Ogre: steer away from quadline. I had one for a bit and it has funky convex, is way too tall, and the kicktail is fairly ineffective.
Sega: Longboarding up is easier just because of the softer wheels. I usually just walk up though because it takes less effort imo.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
What do bushings mainly effect and can someone explain the durometers of bushings and what harder/softer bushings work better for?

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
sega: harder bushings are harder to compress. there is a lot of balance to how hard for your weight and riding style. but in general, the less you want to turn, the harder the bushings you want. people often like harder bushings for park and street skating, and slightly harder for higher speeds. though you definitly want it soft enough to make any quick turning adjustments for high speed

rest, ice, compression and elevation, weren't you paying attention in health class?

I walked into a surf shop saw a long board and said what the .... this will be a blast. My choices were basically Sector 9 or Globe . I went over the features I thought I wanted, long wheel base ( for stability ) kick tail etc ... I wound up with the Glode stain glass 30" wheel base ,slant 180mm inverted trucks, 65mm 83A globe wheels and abec5 bearings. While I was in Florida ( flat ) I rode the thing everywhere no knee or ankle pain ...all was good and I was having a blast and getting a good work out to boot !
Well I get back to the mountains where there are no flat areas to just push and ride , everything is somewhere between moderate slope and bombing hills. I've been trying to do switchbacks in order to scrub off some speed 1). It's not working and 2). I'm getting pain in my knees ( like a compression pain ) plus some muscle pain which I fully expected. I am doing the R.I.C.E thing and it's getting better.
So now, after being on the "fish for a while and doing some reading I think I may have over shot the wheel base a good bit and the increased effort to turn hard at speed may be causing my compression pains in the knee.
Now I'm wondering if a shorter wheel base and some harder wheels might help ? Less effort to turn ( less compression ) and the harder wheels might help me get the coleman working to scrub off some speed .
I'll be 49 next week and I'm thinking " what better present to me "
Any advise would be greatly appreciated .
BTW I really just want to carve the slopey stuff no extreme DH or anything at least not yet and if I do I'll buy something just for that purpose.
Mike
if I were you I'd maybe just invest in some higher quality bushing
they'll allow you to carve better than stock bushings, maybe go with some venoms or sabres.
if your wheels are 83a I'd just learn how to coleman on those, it's gonna be hard at first but worth it

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
Thanks jman , Bushings I can handle. Would it be best to go soft - medium soft ?
I'll keep working the 83a's and see how it goes.

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
i dont know that i would suggest changing anything. bushings are a very personal choice, everyone seems to feel something different with that. it wouldnt hurt to play with, but it might not make m,uch of a difference for you. if you want that board to slide you just need to unweight the board more and it will do the job. and in the future if you want a drifty and carvy board, you might look into a drop through board like a hellcat, or something,

Re: NOOB Questions Answered By Dopamine David
hi ive been long boarding for about a month and i tried to slide today what i accomplished was kind of a drift i guess so i want to know if i was sliding or just doing nothing, what i did is i got to go kind of fast then i leaned to my backside then completely leaned to my front side. what happened is my board kind of drifted and the wheels made a kind of "errrrrrh" sound i guess and it was like a rlly tight turn but i could feel the board skidding is ne ways is that a slide or not, sorry bout the rambling, thanks
