There should be a downhill record for tandem skateboard.

I like to see tandem skateboarding racing as well.

    Puck Shapes:

I've noticed that delrin from the same manufacturer in sheet form instead of rod form seems to give a faster slide.. It might be because the sheet surface is glossier than when you chop pucks off a rod.. Or it might be becasue of a subtle grain that delrin has because of how it's made (slighlty different color at the center of both rods and sheets)..

Need more experimenting and independent verification on this one.. but one idea it gives me is to try out polishing some used pucks to see how much faster they slide, and how much slower they wear down..

When cutting pucks out of a sheet it's hard to resist trying out various shapes.. My experience with the two old pairs of gloves shown is that other than surface area, the shapes have very little effect on the slide:

The shapes I chose this time were to get better hand mobility, primarily for grabbing rail.. which they work well for.. and I kept them symmetrical so they could be rotated to prolong their life.

1/2" thick finger pucks, and 5/8" thick palms. Big bevels on one side only to reduce surface area:

I'm a convert to the style of having the puck lower down on your palm.. too far down though and they'll tend to want to tip forward on you.

General glove making tip: Industrial velcro works great just by itself.. But you have to clean all the fuzz/oil/dust off of the gloves before you stick it on. Just rub the necessary areas with duct tape till no more junk comes off onto the tape, changing tape frequently. Then briefly do the same to the backs of the pucks.

That's all good for delrin anyway.. UHMW I would rather just melt on.. because it lasts longer than the gloves, the velcro takes too long, and UHMW melts and reforms really well.

    And Frankenstein grip to match:

Great to ride it again though.. was getting sick of DH on that short flexy tri-lam. It's stronger than it used to be, and only slightly heavier..

I would charge around $50 for a slightly cleaner version of this repair (mainly cuz epoxy's expensive). So you probably want to find someone locally if you want this done, and obviously only worth it for high end decks that had a lot of life left in them, or sentimental cases.

It's also obviously a lot easier to do on a rigid deck.. delam repair on a dervish would be doable.. but the band-aid style patch would be tough to match the original flex with.

Seems like half of you are already in this lathe thread.. but check it out if you missed it:

    Top quality.

One of the reasons I started this kraffft work thread is because it seemed like the vendor/manufacturer threads were the only ones that didn't die off relatively quickly.. and I enjoy having good conversations that span months and years.

One of the main things I'm trying to do in here is create a little corner on the fish where people can share any insane scheme without getting too heavily flamed.. and where the idea even has a good chance of happening. Scheming is my favorite conversation.

So if you spot any good threads along those lines that I might have missed, I'd appreciate getting PMed about em, or seeing the link posted in here. If you know any good schemers.. invite em in. And if you're doing a lot of manufacturing, start your own manufacturer thread! Good times.

    kraffft, cool looking pucks...

hey, i came up with an idea this week.

    check this out...

the 'pleasure dome' idea has been getting a lot of hype recently,
although rayne wasn't the first to come up with the "W" concave...

so how about a stick-on 'pleasure dome' ?
(I am thinking of calling them "Board Boobs" )
you can add the pleasure dome, um I mean Board Boobs to any board..

the idea is similar to the PPS foam wedges for adding concaves.

just stick the Board Boobs down the center of the board and lay the grip over it...

BTW, I tried my friend's killswitch, I only like the 'pleasure dome' in the rear of the deck (I think it sucks for the front.) Avenger have it just on the rear.
Ideally you can customize and add a Boob to the front or rear, or both...

Now, how do u make a Board Boob?
I think the ideal material for the Board Boob is hard rubber. (requiring a mold)
although hard foam like the PPS wedges can work too... (cutting with hot wire?)

so If someone can make this idea come true, let me know...

just give me a couple of Board Boobs for compensation...

i believe piedogger over in the builders section adds a bunch of w-cave to his boards by taping the area off then pouring 2 part urethane foam over it and then sanding and it comes out quite niceley. isnt exactly removable though.

TheKraken on here and I did that to one of his boards a few weeks ago. We got about a foot of some molding or something like it from home depot that was trapezoidal and just gripped over it. It's pretty steep, but you're definitely locked in there.

With that kind of concave I'd see a problem in having it stay attached to the board, while not being too tall. Too thin and it'll flake/break off, and too thick and it might get ripped off the board!

Post up some pics when you do.. I'm still thinking about a more ideal design for em.. curious to see what you come up with and hear the report on how it works.. The wheel pucks have been generally more treacherous than I'd like..

I'm thinking this might be a better use for the worn out slide wheels.. just one bolt, straight into the end of the staff, to hold it on.. or various other ways. And did I mention how fun that slide staff was?! Especially nice if you don't like all those deep knee bends that sliding usually involves.

Can't help you there.. I watch about two movies a year. One of which this year was Slacker.. which I highly reccomend (it's on Hulu).. but be warned, it might really disturb you.

True about the drag.. and pumping switch is such a weird feeling.

One symetrical skating method that I like (especially with heavy boards: 30+ lbs) is running along side the rolling board.. jumping on and coasting, jump off and run, repeat.. should try that for a mile trial.

It seems like they just have leather soles.. and the road is possibly slightly wet.

I think UHMW would start melting pretty fast at those speeds, with the full weight of a person on it.

JEDDAH - Saudi teenage boys have taken to "sandal-skating" to attract and reach the opposite sex on the main Tahlia streets of Jeddah and Riyadh.
Many a girl while traveling in the privacy of her car has been surprised to find a young man knocking at her window while skating alongside her speeding vehicle, offering his telephone number as he holds on to the car door for dear life. Taking a closer look, she would find the young man dressed in a thobe, skating along on his madas (flat leather sandals) and not roller skates.

If they're 'board boobs' then it has to be silicone.. which would work well. Just make a little crevice and stick your caulk in it.

I have enough puck material that i want to extend the bend around my knuckles an back over the top of my hand. it may end up a little bulky but i think it woudl be a great way to mount a camera. I'll be working on those tomorrow night.

I'm having fun in that lathe thread.. but I figured I'd mention it briefly in here..

Another item for the catalog of services that any properly equipped small builder can provide:

Removing flatspots and coning, equalizing wheel sizes, radiusing lips, and making rain grooves.

I'd charge $20/hour.. with any operation taking less than 5 minutes per wheel (less than $2/wheel). Could be worth mailing wheels two ways for this, especially if you have a large number, but it's also definitely possible to find a lathe locally.

Another service any small builder can offer.. machining lessons.. jk

I'll consider writing something for that thread.. but it borders on being a dark art, especially with jank equipment. The basic premise is tweaking everything that's adjustable (there's tons of tricks for checking alignment), and eliminating slop anywhere else (using true 8mm round stock to mount bearings on).
