    I've got it!

Some sort of caster, that is fastened to the palm of your glove with a hard and soft material for comfort and safety. Could be extended past the wrist to prevent sprained wrists and such, but a caster would be perfect for any-directional sliding, right? Only problem is it sliding out from under you when you apply too much weight, although I guess the barbell has that problem too. Hmm...

So around six months ago I "borrowed" this $1000 souped up powerspec computer.. It was definitely a major factor in getting sucked into the fish here.. super fast web surfing and similarly quick image and video editing..

The guy I got the computer from started threatening to call the cops if I didn't give it back.. so it's gone now. I had two other old computers.. both with big problems.. and a bunch of Windows discs with activation keys that weren't working..

So I'm finally giving Linux a real try.. and after two solid days of computer nonsense.. like this:

    (getting youtube to work)

I'm fully set up with Ubuntu/Firefox/Thunderbird/Gimp/Avidemux.. and so much more.. It still sucks to be on a slower computer.. but it's partially made up for by all the open source programs working better and faster in Linux than they were on Windows.

I'll give a little more of a report after I've worked on it for a while.. but for now it feels pretty great.. In the applications menu there's an add/remove programs option.. which is totally unlike windows. It links up to the internet and gives you the list of thousands of programs you can install for free.. and installs them effortlessly.

But even more psyched to get back to the workshop tomorrow.

Ubuntu is a very nice OS (im using it too BTW) defiantly the best distro of Linux I've used. The open source thing is very cool.

One VERY cool feature that it has is the "Cube Desktop" witch allows you to have multiple desktops and literally rotate them as if it were a cube. I think if you got the most recent release you just install "Avanced desktop settings" from the "Programs/Add-Remove" menu. Then enable it in the system menu. Look up "cube desktop" on youtube and see if you can find an example. It's an extremely cool feature. If you cant find "Avanced desktop settings" in the "Programs/Add-Remove" the actual program that does the feature is called "Compiz Fusion" heres a how-to if you cant find it on the add/remove menu.

Also, watch out for the automatic updates, if it upgrades your kernel it will cause you problems. Id recommend getting it set up and leaving it alone. One thing I learned early about Ubuntu is "Get it working and leave it alone." So i would shy away from installing the updates it will try to install.

I'm really liking this slide glove scheme session.. it's giving me all kinds of ideas. I normally have an aversion to casters.. but now I want to try the most basic things: a caster with a handle on it, to see what it's like.. There was this cruddy product out a couple months ago, Bossco slide gloves, that had three roller balls on the palm.. similar goal but it wasn't well made, and seems like it could only ever work on very clean surfaces.

Appreciate the tips.. my computer definitely can't handle the cube.. can barely handle having more than one ap open.. but i'll try it some day. There's a standard feature that's similar that doubles or quadruples your desktop space, clicking once to move between sections.

Otherwise just turning out wheels today, continuing to refine the process, figuring out how to deal with some bowed rod stock.

you see bowed rod... i see pre-coned solid wheel matrials...

how thick is the rod that bowed? you know you could always stick that aside and slowly make puck out of it. no reason to dissect it all now.

Here's a vid of the current wheel making process.. It's taking about 30 minutes to make a set of wheels.

Couple slides at the end there.. playing around with doing no-hands slides while in a full crouch.. easy to turn it into a hands down if you start to slide out.

I was worried about this black plastic from the first chop saw cut... cut too easy and the remnants weren't as strandy/nesty as usual... definitely not UHMWPE, might be plain PE, or HDPE.. gotta talk to the supplier. Made a set of wheels anyway, and they started shredding dramatically with the first ride, and flatspotted after about 20 min.

    More finished wheels:

I really should make one of these threads...

    Love the muffler

If you just stick a few more parts on there... Mabey you can get it to be street legal

That would be a hilarious way to get past skateboard laws

    It requires wipers.

    YEEESSS

If you all think I'm a mad tad crazy inventor.. watch out for Chainmaillekid..

He's making a board that melts on command to be stored in a bottle.. it has a treadmill surface,, so instead of pushing you just run on the surface of the deck and go three times as fast as if you were running on ground. It's kind of ugly, but so is his mom.. if you think aliens are ugly..

    and he's got CNC machines..

It is possible for a skateboard to also be a chair and to function as well as the usual separate items. The center section of the deck could also function as a brake pedal with no complication of the design.
