just wondering what you all think on video cameras. I want to know what the best kind of camera would be for just filming with friends that still outputs good quality video. price range $200-$400 and $450-beyond

I do a lot of video production work. The first rule for video is do NOT get something with resolution under a standard TV/DVD frame (640x480). If you get anything with a lower resolution, it will have to be resized-up if you put it on a DVD and it's gonna always look crappier. Just like using images in Photoshop - you can downsize an image, and it will always look better - but when you upsize an image, it will always look fuzzier. So, get the highest resolution you can.

Camera technology is always changing. These days, I dig the JVC Everio line a lot. In fact, I shot my whole skate video with Everio cameras. Most of the Everio HD cameras are out of your pricerange. But, the JVC GZ-HD10 Everio is only slightly over $400 and would likely be excellent. It's the most inexpensive HD camera in the Everio lineup.

Among standard definition cameras, the new JVC Everio S GZ-MS120 line is REALLY cool. Only $300 and they record to SD cards. This means no moving parts - great for things like skateboarding and motorcycling and any sporting activites with a lot of vibrations - because the rattling won't mess up the hard drive like hard-drive camcorders are prone to. The GZ-MS120 is not out yet. Will be soon.

If you want to step up to the GZ-MG630, those are available and have a hard drive in them. Still great cameras. Slightly more expensive - about $400 or so. But, at the BEST quality, you can record 14 hours of video. Not bad!

Other folks make hard-disk-drive (HDD) based cameras, like Canon and Sony. Canon and Sony make great products, but JVC has the largest lineup of HDD, so I trust them more with this technology - they've simply got more experience making HDD cameras.

    Good luck in your research.
