We had a map(not a really detailed one) and still it was a pain to find some of the spots,the real trick was to take best route possible and fastest streets,every pic of a landmark was 1 point,the only thing that happened was that there was not minimum for landmark pics on the rules.So we did all of them but one and like 20 plus points for stickers and people on longboards,still we got beated by a team that only did 20 landmarks but they made 50 plus point for people on longboards it was like cheatin' but there was no rule against that,so they won.

hey, i love this idea! if you want to plan this well, i suggest doing the Great Urban Race.
The Great Urban Race | An Urban Adventure and Scavenger Hunt Race

my wife and i did this last may, it was great, and we wanna do the one in september. it's a like, 4 hour version of the show The Amazing Race.
You run around from check point to check point, figuring out clues and taking pictures of all of the locations you were at. someone at the end checks the pics that you took and makes a judgment call about whether you completed it well or not. your team MUST wear a costume (last year,i was superman and my wife was superwoman) and we won for best pics and costumes, it was awesome having phillies yellin' out "yo superman!"

we just couldn't use any PERSONAL transportation, no bikes, skates, taxis, just public.

for THIS race, we'll make it only for longboarders, and who cares if someone uses a map or not? bring your gps, it doesn't really matter, as long as you can figure out the clues and stuff and get to the points.

dont' just use landmarks like "chinatown", make up a clue, like... idk, like, "At Won Chin" (chinatown scrambled up) and once someone figures that out, then you scramble onto chinatown, or something.

we were allowed to call friends to help us decipher clues and look stuff up on the internet, etc.

maybe we have to get the 3 tallest buildings in philly and put them in height order, and get a picture at the smallest of the 3, etc.

this race will take a LOT of planning. and unfortunately, the race planners might not get a chance to race it, because of the clues ands tuff.

sure, some of the clues will be "take a pic of a you and a septa driver" or "get a pic of yourself feeding your partner a cheessteak", etc.

bottom line, i can't wait to do this, this'll be an awesome race!

urban race sounds interesting...but this event is gonna be fun, especially with afro's enthusiasm.....

i say no garmin like gps but phone nav is legal.

im not into scrambled clues. i mean your talkin bout longboarders. we wanna ride and not think lol. but things like 3 highest sky scrapers and things like that i like.

also using friends on the phone and internet would be cool too.

but, i think we have like we start one side of the city and end at Gino's and Pat's. those two are next door to eachother (rite?)

and i think we should add skitching just to see how people use it. but your only aloud longboard. you can do something like pay a cab to pull you.

you can make the clues as easy or as difficult as you want, obviously, to be fair, you should only have a very small number, like 2 people choose the clues, and those people really shouldn't be able to compete. they'd be able to think of routes to go, and even potentially practice, etc.
unless you get entirely separate people who know philly and choose NOT to race,a dn have them do the clues.

cells of course to call to get lost, but afro mentioned how cells with gps/nav would be ok, and a cell w/ nav on it is the same thing as a gps.

one thing to consider is if people are going to cheat or not, and if we unallow gps, then people can potentially cheat and gain the upper hand. if we allow it to be used, then people can't cheat, but it might not be as much of a challenge.

also, we dont' want to make the contest anti-outsiders. so yeah, if you're from philly, you have an advantage, but if you're not, it's not like you would be lost, etc.

also, it's not necessarily that you wouldn't be able to compete, but anyone would have a huge advantage knowing the clues ahead of time, etc.

but this race is far far away, right? we'll figure something out!

Someone mentioned already, but its all about the time in which you finish, not how you get there....

i say don't have rules in regards to navigation or maps, just the clues. (but it'd be a good idea to have a cell in case you get lost)
