We are currently working with Jared Beerman on creating an extensive online resource for paved longboard trails in the Midwest. You will be able to go to www.HeartSkate.Com, search state and county maps, get trail info, directions, and more. Check out what Beerman has to say...
HSC: Please introduce yourself.
JB: My name is Jared Beerman, I am a grad student at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota going for my masters degree in GIS (Geographical Informational Science) with a focus in Natural Resource Management. I grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania
then moved out here for school.
HSC: How are the trail maps made?
JB: I downloaded trail data from the Minnesota Data Deli, and created a layer consisting of just bike trails that are paved. Then downloaded aerial photography at 1 meter resolution. I then made the image transparent so when placed over the hillshade layer, the map is given depth so the elevation changes are visible. With the overlay of the trails on aerial photography I visually corrected any trails that did not fit the images. I also used roads layers from the Minnesota DOT to reference where the trails are located. The information provided on the maps can be typed into google maps for directions.
HSC: How many trails will be mapped?
JB: I currently have 80 maps. Its hard to tell exactly how many trails there are because some of them are county level trails so they are extremely long and take multiple maps to cover. I was thinking towards the end there might be around 125-150 maps total.
