Talking Epic Int'l Skate Fest - THE AFTERMATH

    Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to say thank you so very much to everyone that had anything to do with EISF, because each person contributed greatly to its success. I'd especially like to thank:
-Bethel College, for being willing to host an event unlike anything the campus had seen before
-Jonathan Harms and Jeff Goad, for setting great courses and getting the timing set up
-My roommate Gary Ingle, for running the timer box and keeping tabs on who placed where. This day would have been a mess without his help.
-Everyone who took photos or video at the event and will show someone else what a good time was had today
-My family, for coming out to support the event
-THE SPONSORS, who made everyone's day at the end with a huge pile o' free stuff. SK8TRIP distribution (abec11, etc.), Gravity Boards, Earthwing, Loaded/O'tang, LongBoardLarry, Seismic, sk8kings, and Concrete Wave magazine - all of you guys really stepped it up. You took the smile on everyone's face and stretched it even bigger.

I'm looking forward to seeing photos and video pop up from this event, so bring it on!

I would write more but I've been up for just over 20 hours, running on about 3 hours of sleep, so it is TIME FOR BED. woo!

one more big thank you to everybody that made this event the huge success that it was (that's you guys!) good night!

me too! I know sal's card got corrupted so it'll be a little bit before any show up, if they do. Kitty took a bunch of pictures but injured her knee yesterday while skating on her new board so she hasn't had much time to get the pictures edited and to me yet. As a side note, there may have been some pretty serious ligament damage, so if people could pray for that I'd appreciate it.

So, who else has pictures? I know there were other cameras out and around that day, so let's see them!!

    4. Jeff Goad - 29.067
    5. Derek Yerke - 29.480
    6. Jason Yerke - 30.121
    7. Mike Atkinson - 31.131
    8. Evan Tolley - 31.206
    9. Peter Metzger - 31.815
    10. Burt Beavers - 32.153
    11. David Tolley - 33.167
    12. Steve Powers - 33.361
    13. Conor Roe - 35.478
    14. Dan Roe - 36.687
    15. Collin Beavers - 37.723
    16. Willy Demis - 38.533
    17. Brady Powers - 40.287

The course started out a little slippery but dried out pretty well by the time we got to our third runs. It was here that most people posted their best times - and where a lot of position changes happened!

    Tight Slalom
    1. Jonathan Harms
    2. Jason Yerke
    3. Derek Yerke
    4. David Harris
    5. Bobby Thomas
    6. Jeff Goad
    7. Evan Tolley
    8. Burt Beavers
    9. Mike Atkinson
    10. Peter Metzger
    11. David Tolley
    12. Conor Roe

This race was a lot of fun and a great way to end the day.

    Downhill Slide - Soft Wheel
    1. Jason Yerke
    2. Derek Yerke
    3. Danny Campos

    Downhill Slide - Hard Wheel
    1. Derek Yerke
    2. Jeff Goad
    3. Salvador Campos
    4. Jason Yerke

I'm thinking that next year this event may go under the name "downhill freestyle" to more appropriately fit the level of creativity we saw out there this year. Great job, guys!

    Longskate Freestyle
    1. Daniel Jones
    2. Jason Yerke
    3. Derek Yerke
    4. Salvador Campos
    5. Conor Roe

From what I saw, the level of riding out of these guys was intense. I missed about half of the runs because I had to run back to my room and grab a backup board, having broken mine in practice Let's have a moment of silence for the little green Arcane Mini. [. . .] Thank you.

    And there you have it.

    Videos are here:
    YouTube - heyburtmn's Channel

    Notes from the Epic:

Collin and I left MN around 10:30 on Friday night. We drove until we got too tired and pulled over at at truck stop off the interstate. We slept for a couple of hours and continued on our way. We were getting close to Bethel College at around 9am CST and then ran into the time change to EST - we were late!

We arrived at Bethel around 10am EST and saw that the event was just starting to take form. We spent the day with a great group of skaters and learned a lot. We found some good local BarBQ for lunch too. We finished up the contests and left Mishiwaka around 7pm. We drove until about 1am and then needed some sleep. We ended up taking a wrong exit in the Chicago construction mess and added a scenic 60 additional miles to our journey.

We found that sleeping at official Rest Stops is preferred over truck stops. We travelled up Highway 61 (our tribute to Bob Dylan) and had a sunny Sunday morning drive. We stopped for brunch in Lake City MN (birth place of water skiing) and were back home by Noon.

Enjoy the videos, send Thank You notes to the sponsors and spread the Stoke! The Midwest skate scene is growing and with additional contests like the Epic will have a great future.

Thanks to Peter and his Crew for a great day and all the coordination of events, prizes!
