Re: Michigan Longboarding!
I'm toying with the idea now to attempt synchronizing a Saginaw race around September. It would be cool to get the Lansing and Ann Arbor longboarders to head up and join... There's another contest in Indiana that is planned too. You all heard about it?
Midwest is kickin ass in the longboard arena. It sucks when winter comes. I think a heated parking garage would be a cool idea that could rival ski resorts.
anyways, I'd like to see some things through to help establish a racing circuit of some sort. there are lots of dudes hot on racing from the midwest and I'm one of the guys that supports it bigtime and still has roots. some of you might remember me visiting schools via the pepsi team in the late 70's all over michigan where we did circus like routines, jumping tables and choreographed music freestyle. By today's standards it would be lame stuff but heyyy, we were part of the pioneering effort getting skateboarding seen as a viable sport. So the beat goes on, the new skateboarding age is really taking grips around the planet. And at 55, I love to longboard, shortboard, vertboard, transitionboard and raceboard. I'll never stop promoting from the grassroots level.

great! i have mentioned this last year about possibly firing something up. I did contact the Saginaw Derby Downs people and I believe we can pull this off. Did you know Bay City has a skateboard park? it's pretty funky but fun. the cement was crappy and by now probably even more crappy but there was so much skateable terrain that there has to be good pieces here and there to ride. I have family in Bay City and Saginaw so for convenience sakes, it's possible to pull this baby off by year end. Working with people here in Cal. is like singing to the choir that shows up in droves and I'd like to see that happen in Mich. Apparently the Indiana contest has sponsors like Abec11, LBL, Earthwing, Loaded, Pleasure Tool bearings, Concrete Wave and possibly sk8kings and seismic. We could do the same and I may be able to help expedite sponsorship.
So let's plant some seeds. I have a list of michiganders that held up their hands last year to see this stuff through. I have more time now to get involved since moving away from the beach area . distraction! hehehehehe
anyways, let's fire up the thread and see what we can do!

Saginaw Soap Box Derby
Sepetember 12th, I'll be in the Tri-city area for a family event and would love to help see this thru. Just need some local Michiganders to go up and check the place out.
As I recall, it's a great place to run tight and a hybrid course. Just contact Vaughn, let him know you found out about this through me and the rest can be history.
Let's call it the Mid Michigan Annual Slalom race. We can get some of the big boys to come out and support it since many of the top guys want to support our cause for the future. There are even some great racers from the Detroit area that can lend a hand!
So, I wanted to stoke up the coals on heating up Michigan races. Let's do it!

This sounds awesome. My brother and I (and I'm sure the rest of the Go Greeners) would love to come check it out. There has to be a slalom race in Michigan. We'll add a sunday HS and TS to next years' Madness in the Mitten. Or maybe just a slalom demo and jam at MIM to get people interested in slalom and then race later in the year. Hopefully we could get some of the push racers interested. We have some nice slalom hills in Lansing, but probably nothing as official looking as the Derby site, plus doing it at the derby would save the PITA of getting resident and city permission to shut down a road, etc. At the Chicago and Wisconsin events we met alot of pro and am riders who expressed legitimate interest (but no guarantee) in a Michigan event such as; Jonathan Harms, Steve Pederson, Paul Graf, Dave Larson, Steve Lavin, Tod Oles, Chris Favero, Claude Regnier (CAN), Eric Garlough, Brian Ellison, Joe Behm, Tom Mangelsdorf, some CLS guys, others from MN and WI. Plus we have 5 go greeners that slalom, a legend named Chris Yandall, and the rest of the michigan lokes. If Fadell and Bara were interested we may be able to put together a legit 'pro' class. We hope to have an approx. date by mid-september so people can make room for it next year and spark some more interest at the Southern Fried Cone Fest and Epic International Skate Fest. I'd be willing to help set up something this year too but the short notice would cut turnout and travelers may be ready to pack it in for the winter if they've already hit a few events.
Chris, is there any chance you would be interested in giving a skogging demo at next years Madness in the Mitten? We had 31 racers and about 40 riders total last year. We'd love to get even more riders this year and use the event to get people interested in other styles of skating and deepen their desire to go out for daily cruises. I know, or think, you reside outside of Michigan, so if it doesn't fit the calendar than no worries.

Awesome. I go to CMU and ride around here all the time. If you've seen anyone with slide glove, an Evo with BigZigs, or a slalom board, good chance it was me. It seems theres quite a few longboarders up here. I have 5 or 6 buddies I ride with and see a new rider cruisin about every other week. Thinkin about startin a longboarding group up here where we get as many people together as possibe and jam once a month or something. Gat at me if you wanna ride. Which lots do you skate? the Wal Mart area ones? Theres some decent hills on Watson just off of High St. Nothing over 25 really, but still plenty of fun.

So I guess I'm just writing to say hey- and see if anyone happens to attend CMU I could totally use some help getting the process rolling.

Holy ####...so many new CMU guys. I keep backtracking through the forums and finding your posts. I'd love to help you set something up. You guys hooked us up huge for the push race. I know a decent chunk of riders around here and am always looking for more to cruise with. Get at me.
Sorry about the 4th consecutive post. Been cutoff from here for the last couple weeks.

Hey buddy! And right now I'm getting my list of sponsors to get me around the midwest to spread the stoke. My daily skogging antics are keeping me in shape to race in the masters division which most I've missed this year due to the economy and slow business. Trying to switch gears and get skateboard mfgs that believe in my objective to spread the skog. I 've got Fadell on the hook to nail sept 19th down for him to show and spread the stoke and help organize the race. You are right about getting city permits and parking and all the shennanigans involved with promoting a race when we the ability to use an existing facility like derby downs. it aint great for downhill but for tight slalom/hybrid courses, it should rock. Problem is I haven't seen the surface since early 2000 and it was excellent then. I asked Greg to have a peek and I also asked him to thow his .02 in here. We don't need a huge turnout for this year but the grass root promoters probably could suck it up and make it happen.
So to get Fadell to show up would be a kick in the butt or Sept 19, so let's start talking that date now. I need to be in Michigan the weekend before to see my brother from Cali perform at the Bay City State theater. He's a smooth jazz guitarist and our family from all over the country comes out to support him.
Somebody in Michigan please tool over to the Saginaw Derby Downs and check the surface out. Let me know.
and yes, spreading the skog is my baby and where and whenever somebody wants, i'll got out of my way to make it happen. let's get a schedule fitting assigned!
