ahhhh, getting closer! I'm in Zion (far west edge by Greenbay). I'd like to come down and meet you guys sometime. Still noobish and just carving and a couple of little 15-20mph inclines around the house. Especially if you guys are sliding, lmk. I need to be around and watch some sliding in person before I go for my own skillz.

Re: Chicago Longboard Society
Hey has anyone had the same experience i was riding my board on the sidewalk and a cop flagged me down and bitched me out it was by navy pier and said, you endanger this, you ruin that, the city has to pay for all that bull ####. i just complied i don't really know the laws in downtown about boarding on the sidewalk can anyone help me out or share an experience
-
Re: Chicago Longboard Society
no skating in downtown, thats the rule...........who cares we do it all the time.but navy pier its tight tough just go south to shedd aquarium,we gonna be around sunday.but yea avoid cops specially the ones on segways if you see a cop skate away from him or pick up your board and walk till you are far.And be polite with pedestrians.
-
Re: Chicago Longboard Society
Well let's see. I get tickets riding on the sidewalk, and tickets riding in the street. But the law is that all wheeled vehicle (including rollerblardes) can only utilize the street for transit.
As far as downtown is concerned, it is illegal to ride within the confines of downtown. But like Larry said, that's never stopped me before.
I usually skate so fast through downtown, the cops only have time to shake their heads in disbelief.

Re: Chicago Longboard Society
anyone? no one? i was thinking, if we could get this section of walkup closed. theres a HUGE hill, that would be sick to slide on. anyone know? right by prairie ridge high school and out of the intersection of vermont street? or there is the hill at emricson park, with shittier pavement and not as good a hill.... i really think we should do this, sliding is fun!

Re: Chicago Longboard Society
If you get a slide fest going, I want to come. I need to see, hear and smell the live action to see myself doing it eventually. I'd even bring a couple of potential sliders for you wail on. I need some moving targets for photo ops too.
Just how steep an incline do you need? I've got about 300 yard run that Gecko hit 16.8mph on before it then slopes back up. Little to no traffic and wide road. At least I figure that's where I'll be able to at least do some speed checks and standies eventually.

You don't need that much of an incline. I have no problem sliding at a good pushing speed even.
this is my sliding spot. If you have a small hill it's all about how hard you kick going into it. I can get a good 20mph going, then just take that into the hill and use the hill not to gain speed but to keep it.
If you need any slide tips feel free to hit me up. I'm pretty knowledgeable and can explain them well so you can get the motions down. Also watching someone's form in slowmotion helps a lot for me when learning a new slide.

Re: Chicago Longboard Society
I am in Wauconda. I have some very good hills in my neighborhood where you can hit around 25 mph. Some are steep, some are gradual. I usually ride at night with a headlamp. It seems a lot safer to me-easier to see the cars and for them to see you.
I have ridden the hills in Cary- they are similar, maybe a little more challenging than around here, depending on which hill. I am familar with Walkup Rd. in Crystal Lake, but only from biking. I know some of it is very steep, but kind of narrow to carve.
Anyways, I am 46 and have been skating for over 35 years. I have 3 custom longboards, a ramp board, and a "regular" board. I sometimes skate with 2 other dudes in their 40s in the South Barrington area off off Barrington Rd. There are also some very nice hills off of Barrington Rd. by Biltmore Country Club.
Maybe I will see some of you around this Summer.....

thats a sick video and thats true, i do most of my sliding in my driveway, but sliding on a huge straight hill is the most fun.
also, our chances of getting that section of walkup closed would be very slim, keep posting your spots that you slide at, we'll find a place, if youre serious about getting a slide fest going, we could actually make it happen, i would rather not do an outlaw, that word sends shivers down my spine
