Nah sure if any of y'all have linked up yet, but it would be nice to get this going in earnest--especially if there are enough people involved to get events sponsored by the bigger companies: ABEC11, Gravity, Sector9, Loaded, Landyachtz, Rayne, etc. Free merch for contests/competitions is ALWAYS welcome. General skating workshops, slalom contests, slide clinics, whatever can be thought up to get people outside and on longboards.

I'm also down for regular hill bombing sessions, unfortunately I don't think there are any hills in Chicago proper, so I guess all the action happens out here in the Western suburbs--Lemont, in particular. I haven't taken those hills yet, but I'm coming from San Diego, so I'm hoping to find something comparable to the monsters we have out there. My brother (Smokey) and his crew do a lot of board dancing, so I've been getting into that lately as well. It'd be cool to bomb some hills then do some trick attack and exchange tips.

I also think there needs to be a major garage hunting session. One of my favorite things to do in San Diego was bomb the garages, 'slike skating on butter and the spirals are insanely awesome fun. I have particular interest in the spiral off the John Hancock and the Marina Towers (and skating off them into the river, heh), but I think it's just gonna take a good night's skate to really peek around the Loop and the surrounding areas. I want to find a steep inside the city (or closer than Lemont, anyway) that would work for a slide clinic and there's a skatepark near Wilson & Lake Shore Drive I'd like to check out, too.

Skating anywhere in city proper but the parks/lakes during the day seems stupid with the traffic, especially given that I've already had a semi kill one of my boards downtown, but Millennium Park, Grant Park, Lincoln Park, and the beach trails can all be nifty for cruising and board dancing during the daytime.

For most hill and garage bombing I probably wouldn't even attempt until after around 8 or 9 PM, depending on the location. I think we'd be safe bombing garages in the business district of the Loop after 6 or 7 PM, but outside of that earlier than 8 or 9 PM may be pushing it.

I'd like to do a lot of this with a big group, since it's more fun that way and less likely anyone will be assaulted/arrested if there are 10-20 of us. I know my brother is down and we've got another maybe two or three guys who can join with one guy out of commission due to a recent and rather gnarly spill.

When are good days/times/distances for you folks?

If you're interested in skating in the meanwhile, toss out an e-mail and your location, so I can start a mailing list for Chicagoland sessions. I'll shoot you an e-mail the next time we know we're going to be out and skating.

Cheers!

Salvador Campos (breaks)
sal.campos@gmail.com
Downer's Grove, IL

p.s.

Not sure, but I think there may be a sesh going on later tonight as a friend of a friend is in from Chile and I guess he wants to get some slides in while he's here. Assuming it doesn't rain out in Lemont, we may be hitting those hills tonight--Shoot me an e-mail later today (closer to 3PM) to confirm if you're thinking about coming out (especially if you're traveling a ways, as I'd hate to have you come out if the sesh falls apart).

Breaks, welcome. I'm glad this is starting to bring people together. Please check out our facebook posted further down and join so we can hook up easier. A lot of us are scattered around the area making it a little harder to meet up. we are trying to make a set day to avoid the confusion. Today and tomorrow look like they're getting rained out, but whatevs I'm down whenever. I live in Humboldt Park Chicago just west of downtown and I think there's like at least five more people around here. I don't think it'd be right to drag everybody here all the time so it would be nice to check out everyones stomping grounds. My vote is Thursdays at 4:00pm but let us know what works for you. Once we get a couple meet under our belt it will be way easier to hook up on the fly for imprompto sessions.

Yeah, it just started raining out here so I think tonight is pretty much bust, but the rest of the week looks fairly nice.

Thursday @ 4 PM sounds good.

Is this a suburb or city run?

Also, are there designated meet-up spots yet?

I recommend the Lemont Metra station for the burbs
and I don't know where y'all skate inside the city proper,
but it'd be nice if it was close to the trains or free parking.

Lemme know and I'll see how many folk'll I can rally.

Cheers,

- Sal

AWWW DUUDDE THIS THREAD JUST GOT ME SO SIKED! haha.. might be too excited but i think CLS is awesome, I live in skokie right up north from chicago and i go to UIC, so i can always hop on the CTA, or even cruise around after class. Not really that many peopel that i know of here in skokie that longboard, i kinda got into it myself after watching some kid float down my street, im still kinda new but ive just built my second board, kinda like a loaded vangaurd carbon copy, just no concave. anyway since i only usually go around on my board myself, it would be awesome to get into it with a big group, especially after reading that past few pages. so glad that longboarding is starting to take on a new horizon in teh chicago area, i already got some kids down my street wanting to buy one haha cuz they were staring at me as i was cruising down o my 43incher. and i always get stares from trick skaters at teh Shred Shop (skate shop, prolly some of you have been there) sometimes when i go past it, but yea again i think its awesome that people are starting to get together, and maybe i wont have to cruise around myself anymore even though it is very relaxing

i'm down for an urban sesh on Friday
and something more suburban tomorry.

Lemont or Burr Ridge, depending on
what everyone feels like they can handle.

we'll kick off the one tomorrow @ 7PM or 8PM?
and skate till everyone's gotta break.

Meetup Spot to be determined
(shout out what you want, y'all)

We're also having a suburban sesh tonight @ 8PM
This one's happening out towards Downer's Grove,
and it'll be extremely easy going, as we're bringing
along a couple of fresh faces and it's their first time,
so it'll mostly be trick attack and nice, easy slopes.

Hit me up if any of y'all are out by Downer's Grove
and down for a little board dancing/trick attack.

i have a day job, so i wont be able to make thursdays at 4. and facebook is blocked here at work, so i havent gotten a chance to sign up there.

but im usually down to skate at night downtown or near-west side, and desperately seeking some fun parking garages to carve up. ive found a few low-security ones, but their layout is kinda weak and not that fun to skate. get in touch if you know of any good spots or want to go out hunting.

we had three people come out to Burr Ridge last night,
but they were all from the crew I usually skate with.

pretty decent sesh, though.

it started out as just a couple milk runs down some
nice buttery hills, but then we stumbled onto some heat.

found two new, gnarly steeps that'll run ya pretty quick,
and a crazy stretch we've taken to calling the "Track Run."

it's basically a long decline with a series of small hills that dip into each other
and spill you out fast coming up to some tracks and a sharp, inclined 120 degree
turn that requires a really wide 'n deep carve, a sharp drift, or a full out heel/toeside slide.

just to make it.

'sfunny, i didn't even realize the turn was there
the first time we took the run, so i took a little spill
trying to turn my stop slide into a sliding drift right.

it's the money, man.

oh, couple downsides:

broken ass asphalt in places.
we're talkin' cracks, brother.

nothin' anything larger than 66s
can pretty much handle easy,
but it'll still bump ya around.

gravel is another slight negative, heh.

my brother took a righteous little spill
just carving and drinking some gatorade,

stuff is like black ice, just eliminates traction.
but we pretty much know where the pockets
are located and might even clean up next time.

just need to remember the handbroom 'n dustpan, heh.

also:

along some of the streets leading
to the butter there are these
deep squares of asphalt missing.

's####in weird (what purpose do they have?)
but if you hit it at any speed it'll pitch ya quick.

otherwise, yeah, gravy =D

what's goin' on everybody?

i'll be in the city solo t'night w/ my dervish
and prolly one or two more decks mos'likely,
but i'll hanging out with some non-boarding
friends in Wicker Park trying to convert them.

my freshies aren't gonna make it exceptionally easy
to convince 'em, but i figure i can at least get them on.

i'm hoping i can get a few of 'em interested enough
to go for a quick little midnight parking garage hunt.

if anyone wants to come out for a little drinking,
meeting some new people and chilling, lemme know:

Since Chicagoland is such a big sprawling area, I would like to invite people to Chicago to ride with us and also schedule dates where we can ride your spots as well. CLS has secured sponsors to assist us in any gatherings or events we might put on, but the problem is we need greater numbers to support such sponsorships. My sponsors can supply event shirts and stickers, banners and much needed cash, along with the proper permits to actually put on a fun and legal event. They also are willing to donate product for raffles of product tosses to help draw more people and are also able to assist in advertising around Chicagoland to help gain a wider audience. First things first though. Before any of this can happen we need to acquire more riders who are willing to represent the crew and would like to reap the benefits of a solid crew and team discounts. I invite anyone interested to please post here so we can hook up and skate. We are allowing all skill levels and benefits will be based not on contests, but on spreading the stoke. Longboarding rocks and I feel it shouldn't be too hard to get more people involved with our fine sport. The more people you get involved in the sport, the more you take on a leadership roll in the Society, the better the discounts and the better the hook ups. With Sector9 being bought by Quiksilver I see longboarding about to explode over the next two years. And when Midwest companies decide to get into longboarding who do you think they're gonna ask.....us. So send me a line and I'll send you some stickers. At some point CLS will be prototyping some new decks and it'll sure help to have a broader design team to test out our product. I'd rather give out free decks to people I know than send off to John Doe and hope he rides well enough to give usable feedback.
This group looks sweet, I started longboarding about 5 months ago, And I have started to build my own boards. I will return back to Chicago To North Park University (in the Albany Park area) around the 22nd of August. I would be sweet to do some longboarding in Chicago. I can do whatever. I tend to prefer more cruzing/carving but I hopefully will have a speed board by the time I get back to Chicago.

haha cool vid, I am living in Milwaukee and haven't found any other skaters to ride with lately. I don't have a longboard, just a regular deck, but changed my wheels and stuff to get into downhill and sliding. I'm pretty new at it and find it hard to practice since everytime I find any hill thats decent someone kicks me out.

Anyway, Chitown is only like an hour and a half from me. If anyone is up for meeting up to ride and give me some tips on sliding, I'm all for it.
