Whats up guys/gals. So, there is about a 50% chance i could be moving up there to the LaCrosse area at some point this year. I was just wondering how the scene is up there. Are there many people up there that skate? Speedboarding more specifically. Im down for any kind of skating, but 40+ runs are what i like most. I know the bluffs up there have GOT to offer up some nice runs, but i dont know how accessable they are.
Also, i dont remember seeing a whole hell of a lot of parking garages in the time ive spent there, but we didnt actually get in to LaCrosse all that much. if i moved, my wife and i would be living in Onalaska.
I am a pretty dedicated longboarder. i try and skate 5 days a week if possible, whether it be downhill or garages. im hoping that i can still keep that up if i head up there. obviously im not gonna get to skate much if at all during the winter months, which really sucks.
Hopefully there is a decent crew up there i can run with if i decide to make this move. We are weighing the pros and cons of it right now, most of it henging on what happens with both of our jobs. we've been offered some nice opportunities there, but it would mean leaving what we have here.
i searched and found a few threads, but a lot of them were dated so i just thought id start a new one and see who is still active on the fish up there. Let me know guys. This could make things easier on me if i decide to take the plunge!
another shameless bump. These posts move too damn fast.
I know there has to be at least a few people in that area that read the fish as much as I do.
sorry not really, wisconsin is completely new territory to longboarding, enjoy skating alone, (like me). I have one friend and he is going to leaving for college soon. is stought by la crosse I don't exactly know where that collge is.
Haha, funny you ask... My girlfriend was going to Viterbo University this past year and I drove down there about every other weekend, but changed majors and is no longer going...
I didn't really spend any time in Onalaska, but the bar strip and along the river in LaCrosse are great places to cruise. There are also one or two pretty decent parking garages, the one I remember didn't have a guard (at least not on the weekend), was 6 stories, and you could take healside or toeside down it. There are also some super sick hills with hairpins and crazy corners in the bluffs Most you could pretty easily get to 40+ on. I could show the places I went on Google Maps if you want...
As far as other boarders I only ever saw 2 other people on one occasion. They were riding Sector 9 completes and had no idea what Silverfish or slide gloves were. So yea I'm guessing you'll be pretty much alone.
As far as the town, like I said I didn't spend too much time in Onalaska, but LaCrosse is a total bar/college town. Onalaska seems to be much mellower, but there are college kids everywhere. There are also some places to hike and camp along the bluffs, at least on the Minnesota side, and... well its Wisconsin so don't expect too much :\
However if you did move I would honestly consider coming down to speedboard with you. So much stoke is killed for speedboarding living in the suburbs (read: cars f**king EVERYWHERE! and no good hills) Lemme know what happens with you and your wife. I'm sure if I paid for most of the gas (takes half a tank to get there here) I could get others to come along.
thats pretty awesome. i keep browsing around on google earth looking at all the elevations and there seem to be some nice roads kinda tucked away in the bluffs, but you cant really tell what their purpose is, or if its even a road at all (some of them could just be a gravel road for a factory or something like that)
how is it where you are? if i make the move id be willing to make the drive over there every now and then also if you guys have a bigger scene. im really hating the fact that im probably gonna be alone if i wanna do anything other than cruise a campus. i ride normally with anywhere from 3-20 people on any given day, so yeah, gonna be a little different.
as of now, its looking like we may not end up going till at least march or so. when i posted yesterday, it was going to be a lot sooner, like before the end of september. but, my wife and i talked it over last night and there are just some loose ends we need to tie up here before we make that jump. we could be ready to go as soon as november im guessing, but her sister that lives there in onalaska said dont even bother trying to move all the way from texas in the winter. just wait till the snow is gone! we'll see what happens.
In the metro area there are some okay hills, but really nothing over 40mph :'( A group of us just went for a sesh this morning and we were hitting high 30's. There were close to a dozen of us, but the Minnesota skate scene is still pretty small. If you made any trips up to the cities (about 150 miles from Onalaska/Lacrosse) I would be happy to introduce you to the other people around, skate as much as possible, and show you runs.
As for winters... yea they're long, cold (compared to Texas), and some times just unpleasant, but they bring snow to the slopes which is always a good time. I don't know if you're a snowboarder or have ever been, but there is a ski area just south of Lacrosse called Mt. Lacrosse, that I hear is alright. There are also numerous areas around the twin cities and a few on the way up.
PS: Also I'm not sure if you're in to hunting/fishing/hiking ect... but if you are I would be happy to discuss places to go.
