Re: I don't care what you think hip hop is
I've definitely become a huge fan of Atmosphere, P.O.S. and Buck 65 lately.
I highly suggest everyone check out The Beatific by Buck 65, I haven't found one person who dislikes it yet.

Haha I still like I love College. It's one of the only REALLY mainstream songs I've enjoyed lately. Just cause it's so fun loving.
Jaxx, great finds on those videos man. Pretty dope. I remember months ago, just looking through like all the DMC videos I could find. I don't know turntablism half as well as some people who consistently go to the shows, but I still love stuff like DJ Kentaro and DJ Def Cut. Here's one of my favorite Kentaro bits.
Never heard of Deez Nuts. I can't quite remember, but I almost remember the terms from some Hilltop Hoods song. As in like it was part of the chorus and obviously pronounced "deez." Maybe it was a feature or something, I dunno.
Are you refering to Talib Qweli? If so, he's pretty sick. I enjoyed stuff like Mos Def better though.
Buck 65 is sick man! His voice reminds of a less pissed off and more talented version of DMX.

anything intentionally spelled wrong, called swaggy, that rips off famous quotes, in glorification of organized crime, has more than one z in the artist's name, or contains invalidated circular logic automatically sucks.
in the words of immortal technique- "just cause your record went platinum don't mean you rock, it just means a million people are stupid as f##k".

Then you're missing out on a lot of amazing artists from the early 90's when Hip-Hop was being defined...
Then you go on to quote Immortal Technique... when all he does is spout hypocritical and nearly racist conspiracy theories? There are many past and present artists that are much much better than Immortal Technique.

what he was trying to say is that the mainstream, capital record wanna be's are not rapping. the ones who are nearly on their hands and knees begging for attention and money, talking about things they dont know, and "rapping" about why they are better than you. these are the people who dont rap, these are the people who are controlled by agents and money and fans that they dont care about. they do what the average american wants them to, and the average american is stupid as hell.
immortals music is practically his diary, he actually sings about what he feels. people like immortal because he has been there, his songs are true. although i dont agree with that quote, i think its vague and not thought out. in some cases it's 100% true. but in others, its false, didnt the beatles make quite a few platinum records?
hip hop was not being defined in the 90's. hip hops reputation of being "gangster" was defined in the 90's. in jamaica and africa in the 60's and maybe even the 50's hip hop was being invented. as it became bigger in jamaica it began to spread to other countries, and finally in the 80's it hit america, hard. this is when american rap was invented, it was underground and began to creep upwards and into the 90's, when gang members and thugs were rapping, and people like tupac and biggie gave it the reputation it has today in america.

I know. Immortal would never rap about how much better he is than other people. He's just so, like, real. All those fake-ass mainstream "rappers" like Eminem never rap about their feelings.

Re: I don't care what you think hip hop is
Atmosphere
Black Star(Kweli & Mos Def)
Blue Scholars
Brother Ali, of course
Common
Common Market
Felt
Method Man & Redman
P.O.S
Typical Cats
Basically I like artists that have meaningful lyrics. I look for lyrics in a song before i listen to the beat. There are alot of artists, such as blue scholars, p.o.s, atmosphere, typical cats, etc. that don't get the amount of airtime or recognition that they deserve. But alot of them don't care, or want, alot of airtime. Which makes me respect them even more.
People such as Lil Wayne and other artists who rap about; cars, girls, money, and fame get more airtime than people who rap about the real problems in society. I just think alot of people have been conditioned to the point where they have a really hard time accepting genuinely good hip hop.
But whatever, i don't hate people who don't have open minds, because I'm not going to waste my time doing that. Rant
I'm sayin what else is there to do besides relax,
Let the problems in your mind become ancient artifacts

Did you even listen to the last Kanye album? If dude doesn't talk about his feelings, I'll eat my slide gloves. He's deplorably self-indulgent, but he's the first hugely successful rapper to talk about being middle class and from the suburbs.
Say what you will about Lil' Wayne's outsize ego, but he's got nasty rhyming skills and a totally unique free-associative wordplay style of rapping. I wish I could do what he does with words.
If anything, we should hate on mainstream rap right now because it turned into boring, mediocre, insipid club music.
