I don't care what you think hip hop is
I don't care if you think hip hop is dead or alive or a vegetable or a deity or a person with a deadly illness that still has some hope, but not much.
HERE'S A THREAD TO POST WHATEVER YOU LIKE IN THE HIP HOP GENRE. Whether it was back in the day, from recent years, from sometime in the middle. It might be alternative, gangsta, conscientious, humor, horrorcore, or whatever. Anything that YOU like in this terrible/wonderful genre. Post something about it. Anything. Discussion, videos, lyrics, etc.
Come on guys. Give 'er.

I haven't heard a lot of Asher Roth, but I actually really liked his I Love College song. It's very chilled out and nice. Chilled out rap is always great. Can you direct me to any other good Asher Roth tunes?
Also,

Re: I don't care what you think hip hop is
And I guess to get things rolling on my end, here's a little list of the hip hop/rap stuff I'm into and a little bit about em if you're in the market some new tunes:
Aesop Rock: Great underground hip hop. He's a def juxxer so he's a little on the darker alternative side. But his lyrics are insane. It's almost completely metaphorical. Some think it's utter nonsense, some think it's pure brilliance. You be the judge.
Afrika Bambaataa: OLD SCHOOL! These guys are some of the founders of the hip hop genre. Back from the Sugarhill Gang era, this around the time when funk was just starting to evolve into hip hop.
Afterhours: Some alternative Aussie hip hop.
Agents of Change: To all you punkers out there, Agents of Change is amazing Crack Rock Steady inspired hip hop. Great, FAST flow. Some of the same political views that CRS carry.
Apathy: Some great underground hip hop. Very cool hip hop that lies all over the map. Some dark an light hearted stuff. It reminds me a little bit of Classified.
Atmosphere: Some very unique Rhyme Sayers Entertainment hip hop. Atmosphere offers, to me, a very realistic view on life in Slug's lyrics. The beats are usually pretty consistent with a few standouts in each album, however Slug's voice is a very recognizable, unique kind of voice. Great type of stuff for people who may be into Def Juxxers, but are looking for something a little different.
Awol One and Slug: A little bit of a hit or miss side project for Slug. There are some GREAT songs among a very mediocre album.
Beastie Boys: What can I say? The original white rappers! Either you love em or you hate em.
Bias B: Classic Aussie hip hop. His main influence is graffiti, in his lyrics and his flow, you can tell it's what inspires him to make his music.
Binary Star: I haven't had a lot of time with Binary Star yet, but so far it seems to be some great conscientious rap with some very consistent flow.
Blackalicious: Best Quannum project I know. Very poetic with some unique beats and rhymes.
Brother Ali: Brother Ali is another Rhyme Sayers act and is quite the interesting character. He is very religious and completely albino. With no exaggerating, he's ACTUALLY albino. His music is very thoughtful and has some very recognizable gospel music inspired songs.
C-Rayz Walz: Great flow, usually very catchy and unique songs. I can't remember if he is still on Def Jux. Even if he isn't now, he was at some point. Yet, he doesn't have the same alternative sort of sound that a lot of the more popular Juxxers have.
Cage: Now here's Cage. He DOES have the same alternative sort of sound that a lot of the more popular Juxxers have. It's very nicely executed. His voice is quite unique. A little nasally. And he lived a VERY messed up life that is reflected in his lyrics.
Cannibal Ox: Good god, Cann O is... very hard to describe. They only had one album, but it is an underground hip hop CLASSIC. Very dark.
Classified: Upbeat, realistic Canadian hip hop. My favorite thing about him is he's easy to relate to. However, one complaint I here a lot about Class is that he is a little bit too self obsessed. Not propping himself up, but just the fact he always talks about himself. I personally am fine with it. Some aren't.
cLOUDEAD: Anticon. Weird. Certainly interesting.
Cool Calm Pete: Nice and chilled out, Cool Calm Pete shows the world that Korea has a place in the genre. More Def Jux. Definitely has some elements you'd expect out of the label, but all in all, it's more chilled out than usual.
Deep Puddle Dynamics: Alternative hip hop group that takes the Anticon artists doseone, Sole, and Alias and mixes a hint of Rhyme Sayers in with Slug. The album was recorded in an odd way however. It turned out great despite being written and recorded in a total of 2 weeks. Haha
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien: Oh the classics. Del covers all the bases. He really is hard to describe, got a very recognizable voice, but his music covers quite a few types of hip hop. Has a very cool album where he goes by Deltron 3030 paired with Dan The Automator
A Diction: Aussie hip hop. Only a few memorable tracks. Not the best aussie stuff I've heard, but it's got some high points.
doseone: Very creative anticon music. doseone has lyrics that make about much sense as Aesop, yet he pumps out amazing, unique hip hop. Very trademark nasally voice. His albums are SO odd.
Dynospectrum: Cool alternative hip hop. It kind of reminds of Deep Puddle Dynamics. Very worthwhile listen, but I'd still say DPD is better. That's just my opinion however.
El-P: So there isn't TOO much more Def Jux after this. I just noticed, a lot of it happens to be in the first half of the alphabet. El-P is very dark and his beats are similar to Aesop's. In fact, he does a lot of work on Aesop's albums.
Electric: Very underground, CHILL hip hop. Quite jazzy and very light hearted. One of my personal favorites.
Enz: French hip hop. Again, very light hearted. Some great beats.
Grayskul: This is some very dark hip hop. Not horrorcore, but Grayskul was partly inspired by metal music.
Heltah Skeltah: Underground, horrorcore/gangsta rap. Among the people I know, including myself, we think they have some of the best flow around.
Hilltop Hoods: If you know ANY Aussie hip hop, its likely you know Hilltop Hoods. Very close to the roots of hip hop. They have a very fun, light hearted feel, but still like to get serious every once and a while. I love the beats
Indikator: Alright, this is a hip hop gem right here. The Vision was a great underground hip hop vinyl. They play some awesome old school hip hop. The beats are a little inconsistent, but still I'd say when tunes like Back To Yorktown hit the nail on the head when comes to beats. Tracks like Damage... Not so much.
Jedi Mind Tricks: I'm pretty sure most people here would know of Jedi Mind. Aggressive, horrorcore rap. Some religious influences.
Jurassic 5: J5 really embraces the roots of hip hop in my humble opinion. Very light hearted.
K-Otix: Some nice underground rap.
K'naan: K'naan is the REAL ghetto rapper. From Somalia and is greatly influenced by his home. Influenced by African music quite often. Has a very recognizable voice. Almost like a better Lil' Wayne voice. Haha
Kero One: Christian, Jazz hip hop. Guy is Korean, he speaks English. Very relaxed.
KRS-One: He's a classic, but I don't know how to describe KRS-One. He's one a kind and you might hate him, you might love him.
Leak Bros: Cage and Tame One. Pretty dark. Best part is the only album they have out is ENTIRELY about doing PCP.
Legion of D.U.M.E: Essentially is what Darc Minds started off as. Legion of D.U.M.E is a great underground old school rap act. They have one 2 song vinyl recorded.
Lyrics Born: Pretty neat Quannum act. Feels a little like Blackalicious, but more light hearted.
Mac Lethal: Ohhhhhhh Mac. Rhyme Sayers guy. I love Mac. He's doesn't take himself that seriously, yet still has some intriguing views on the music industry and life. I actually really enjoyed part of the description the Rhyme Sayers site gave for him as a
"hilarious, emotionally in-tune musical character."
Matty B: Aussie hip hop. Great sort of slice of life music.
MF DOOM: MF DOOM is a crazy mother fucka. He has such an odd voice, but it seems to resonate in a lot of people's memories. He also has A LOT of instrumental albums known as the "Special Herbs" albums.

Re: I don't care what you think hip hop is
Mos Def: Some great rap music. He definitely got some great flow. His lyrical content is pretty good, but in my honest opinion, the way he flows is a lot more appealing to me than his lyrics.
N.W.A.: Ahahahaha THE FIRST GANGSTA RAP GROUP! Straight out of mothafuckin Compton!
Nighthawks: I haven't heard much of it at all, but it is a Cage side project. Check em out yourselves, I haven't formed a strong opinion on them yet.
Notorious B.I.G.: If you don't know... then GO FIND OUT. If you don't know Biggie, you're missing out. He is a really big (excuse the pun) player in the development of modern hip hop.
Original Flavor: Old school rap music. Great, memorable tunes. Lyrical content isn't exactly deep, but it sounds damn good.
Perverted Rym Throwaa: Man, another old school hip hop gem. A little gangsta, but SUPER catchy. Has one 3 song vinyl.
Pete Rock and C.L Smooth: Very jazzy hip hop music. Soooooo relaxing.
Revelation: Well I really haven't heard a lot of Revelation yet, but he is a local legend type of rapper. He has a very relaxed style and some very conscientious lyrics.
Rhythm Ruckus: ONE OF MY FAVORITES. Vermont locals, they have a super unique style. Influenced by their lives, drugs, and above all, the music industry, Rhythm Ruckus shows that you don't have to be big or even extremely skilled to make a difference. Truly, Ruckus isn't the most skilled duo, but they are creative, at least proficient at rhyming, seem to be happy with what they are doing, have some kickass beats and choruses, and have a message to deliver.
Rottin Razkals: Old school rap. It sounds a little gangsta, but it's not really lyrically that gangsta. Very catchy. Some nice beats.
Run DMC: Super old school. Run DMC is hard to describe. Slow and heavy rap music. They are truly a CLASSIC group.
Sage Francis: Pretty dark and conscientious rapper. Almost sounds like Def Jux. It isn't, but sounds like it. Sage also has a recognizable smokey voice.
Sole: Anticon. Awesome free flow, "flow of thought" type of lyrics. He just let's loose and his brain spews out into the mic.
Souls of Mischief: Underground, catchy rap music. Not a lot to say about them, but don't get me wrong, they still sound so good.
Sugarhill Gang: THE FIRST. Sugarhill is the first hip hop group in my opinion and in the opinion of many others too. Old school. Best described as disco, funk, hip hop.
Surreal and The Sounds Providers: The Sound Providers on their own and with Surreal both surmount to just some top notch jazz rap. Surreal raps about his life in the same way Classified does, but is a little more self serving.
Sweatshop Union: Very politically (socialist) charged hip hop. Very conscientious. They have a message to spread. One of my first hip hop groups.
Train of Thought: In the simplest terms. Aussie and flow coming out of the ass. AMAZING diction.
A Tribe Called Quest: Old school hip hop. Another major founder of the hip hop we listen to today.
Vast Aire: Half of Cann O. Kinda similar to Cann O, but a lot more haphazard and weird.
Werd of Mouph: One of the only groups that sampled Biggie well. Simply awesome. Old school, chilled out, great lyrics. All within one 2 song vinyl.
Zion I: Some tracks I find a little boring, but when Zion I does a good job, they REALLY do a good job. Almost a little RnB style, but mostly just underground hip hop.

I was testing out some Busdriver a few weeks ago and I didn't like it a whole hell of a lot. It's that kind of music where you can personally see WHY a lot of people like it, but I'm not exactly a fan.
