    Default Cover Songs

I was looking over the music forum and thought we should have a original song vs. cover song thread. Simply list an original song and the cover and explain why you like one over the other.

Planet Caravan- Black Sabbath cov. by Pantera

This ones a toss up for me.

I Shot The Sheriff- Bob Marley cov. by Eric Clapton

    Marley all the way

 covers dont do that much for me... bands either do it their own way, which means it can rock, or be absolutely terrible... or they can try and make it sound as close to the orriginal as possible.. which i think sucks.

haha, hell look at the Rancid/NOFX split. i love both these bands.. but NOFX's tracks are aweful.. rancids are great.. but id still rather listen to the originals!

well, i guess i can play along a little... Limp Bizkit's cover of Faith is all kinds of win over the original.

Big D & The Kids Table does an AWESOME cover of Little Bitch, but i do like the specials version about the same amount. tie

The Slackers do a great cover of Dead Or Alive... i like it better than the original, but then again i like ska more than butt-rock.

what about rage against the machines album renagades? i thought that album was ****ing great. all the songs are covers exept for renegades the song i beleive. i thought alot of those songs off of the album were bad ass. but alot of them you couldn't really compare to the originals because they are totaly different styles. like maggies farm by bob dylan or a minot threat song they covered. totaly different. but i like rage's cover of how to kill a man better than the original cyprus hill version.

easy star all stars vs. pink floyd - dark side of the moon cover

first off if you have the balls to do a dark side of the moon cover you get props from me. for those who dont know the easy star all stars did a reggae cover of pink floyds dark side of the moon album, called dub side of the moon. both were wayyyy different.

i like this cover a lot because they kept the heart of the original without making it a balant copy. you decide for yourself.

I've always liked the covers that The Dickies have done like The Sound of Silence, or Paranoid.
The originals are great, but they're even better when completely off key and played at a million beats per minute.

I've never really been a fan of Big D, but I must concur that their Little Bitch cover is fantastic.

I think Lemonheads did an even better job.
They also did a rather interesting, almost eerie, acoustic cover of The Misfits - Skulls

I did some research and found some covers that I think are the equal of the originals.
Some of these were different generations I suppose, but I cant hate on these covers.

    Roll Over Beethoven- Chuck Berry><Beatles
I Fought The Law- Crickets><The Clash
Cum on Feel The Noize- Slade><Quiet Riot
    Hard To Handle-Otis Redding><Black Crows
All Along the Watchtower - Dylan><Hendrix
    California Sun- Rivieras><Ramones
    Tainted Love- Gloria Jones><Soft Cell
    Walk this Way- Aerosmith><RUN DMC
Heard It Through The Grapevine- Gladys Knight><Creedence
Real Wild Child- Johnny O Keefe><Iggy Pop
Smokin In The Boys Room - Brownsville Station>< Motley Crue

    And ........
this must be the greatest and most versatile song in the world!!!..... talk about a few degrees of separation- Banana Splits Theme Tune/ Bob Marley Buffalo Soldier

    +Dickies-Banana Splits 8)

    All GOLD baybeeeeee

There are plenty of covers that far surpass the originals, and often end up with the cover being thought of as the original, such as:

    Twist And Shout - Beatles
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
    Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
    Hush - Deep Purple

    Walk this Way- Aerosmith><RUN DMC
Not sure if you would really consider this a cover, since Steven Tyler and Joe Perry played on both (can you cover yourself?)

Yeah I know,... but I reckon RUN DMC approached them with theirs, and the Aerosmith boys couldnt let them do the cover without them. It was a superior version of the song IMO. ... and I think they knew it too.
Thats just a guess anyway. I dont know the real story.
RUN DMC could have just used samples like hip hop at the time was doing, I think someone, somehow just couldnt let them own that song.

Yeah Jimi Hendrix did cover a lot of songs. but that is pretty usual in the blues/jazz world. A lot of famous jazz artists and composers play off standard songs and they have great success. one of the best big bands was Count Basie & his orchestra. They played some of the best versions of a lot of the jazz standards out there.

and talk about stan kenton. they play" covers" all the time...

But the unusual thing about Hendrix was he was always fascinated with Bob dylan for some reason and loved to cover and jam around on his songs. which is funny bc Bob Dylan wrote classic Folk songs...not blues. And i have to agree the "All along the Watchtower" is WAY better than the original. Hendrix tracked all of the instruments on the finalized recording except the drum set. That man was amazing.

as for my 2 cents. i would say System of a down's cover of Black Sabbaths "snowblind" is way better.

new System of a Down sucks so bad. Daron shoulda never taken over. Serj ftw
