first and foremost, you can dl itunes for free dawg. it's the itunes music store that would require charges. secondly, don't buy the shuffle. on a recent business trip i got one in a gift bag. i own and 10 gig 3rd gen ipod. i'm not a fan of the shuffle. it's priced pretty well, but i'd rahther you save up dough and buy an ipod or non-apple-worthy mp3 player. are you aware that apple offers educational discounts for kids in school. if it hasn't changed, you can get a 10% discount on some hardware. doesn't seem like much right? when you're spending $250-$300, a 10% discount might prove helfpul. do some research, i've seen a lot of ipod copies in gizmo magazines.
it costs $16 (the price of a cd) to fund an african child\'s school tuition for an entire year.

    I like my iPod shuffle:
    - long battery life (roughly 18h (!))
    - elegant and robust design
    - I like it just to listen to the music without browsing or searching. (well you can do that with all other players as well)
    - seamless integration with iTunes (which is the most important feature for me)
    wefunk® - spacetime bending machines
    composite design and lobotomy services

You dont have to pay for the songs if you dont download them off ITunes. You can just import the songs from another folder but that can be time consuming.

I've converted to iTunes for all my music. Winamp is a dinosaur.

Use dBPowerAmp Music Converter (www.dbpoweramp.com) and convert it to a lower bitrate MP3. 128kbps is usually the rate where you don't notice any quality loss although you can get away with 96kbps... the lower you go the smaller the file, however the lower the quality as well.

128 kbps is the industry standard for cd quality. i would not go any lower than that.

You can get a 4 gig iPod mini for not much more than the 1 gig shuffle.

I use iTunes for all my music too. It works and is easy to use.

agree with sal on this one... the shuffle has very little memory. better to invest a little bit more and upgrade to a mini.
