One of the best experiences of my life

The other night we had the battle of the bands at our school. My band got started a little before March when two guitarists needed a drummer to lay a beat down so they could jam. We would just jam all day.

Well anyway we decided we would start writing material for the battle of the bands since we had to have one cover song for it. We never had a chance to get together and practice though so we practiced for about 15 minutes before the whole thing started. We had never ran our songs all the way through that we were gonna play. We find out that the first band didn't show up and we were forced to go first. We were pretty pissed since there was nobody there. My girlfriend didn't even show up yet. We played anyways and nailed both of our songs very well. Then we went into a jam and we ended up playing Hey Joe somehow in it. It was a good performance by us and we got what little people were there moving. The night goes on and there's some crappy bands some pretty good ones but we knew we had no chance at winning with some of the bands that were there.

When they finally made the decision there was some confusion. They announced the top three bands with one of them being us. There was some confusion and they were like "wait, we messed up" So we just assumed we weren't supposed to be up there and went back down to the crowd and another band went up. Then they announced the winner...it was us...we were a little hesitant but the guy was like "I'm serious, you won."

I took the money before they could take it away from us and we were going insane. We're only Sophmores and somehow pulled off winning with never playing the songs together before.

So we got ourselves $300 and gave away some of it away to the other bands and now we're on our way to getting a PA!

We plan on recording some stuff at my friend's house next week if you wanna hear.

congrats man. i just cant seem to keep my bands togeather. i'm gonna try again this summer. mainly metallica covers until we write some of our own ****. unless someone comes foreword i'll be forced to sing. that's what i hate. i'm not a great singer but the only one with enough balls and knows all the words lol i'd much rather just play lead.

well the best to u guys and def shoot me something when / if you get somethin online.

heheheh...a lot of people are pissed that we won. Mainly because most of the people didn't see us and we were known by no one as a good band. Rumors are going on that they miscounted and we really tied with another band and all that stuff. We already spent the money though and next year we are gonna be kickin' even more ass!

Oh, I don't know anything about PAs or any of that stuff and when I read everything about them I don't get it. Is there a website that will explain this stuff in simple terms for me or can somebody here explain?

Cool! Congrats Mellow! That's awesome. Keepin' a band together is one of the toughest things to do. Especially when everyone gets a little older and starts drivin' and starts gettin' laid. It's tough to find people that are into it as much as you - trust me!

PA gear is expensive - good luck! My advice is to buy good stuff a little at a time, it'll save you in the long run - again, trust me!

Mackie boards or speakers
Yamaha speakers are good
some Crate stuff is good for the money
Yorkville is also good for the money
Peavey is good for the money too


Used stuff is a good way to save $$$ - look for a band breaking up. If they bought the stuff together, they just wanna dump it and split up the money fast.

Good advice. Shures all the way, and a kit mic set. jbl speakers, crown amps. Kinda pricey, but well built. Depending on how many members you have, get a small powered mixer and a set of 15" loud speakers.
