it's terrible, winamp or vlc are both much better. You'll probably prefer winamp if you're used to itunes... vlc is very lightweight, but the ui very basic.
If you have any FLAC, MPC is the best in my experience.

I use Rythmbox, very comparible to iTunes, but it's on Ubuntu. Don't know if it's available for Windows or Mac, hah!

WinAmp if you're on PC, otherwise iTunes is pretty awesome on Mac I'd say. What do you guys use to play FLAC on Macs?

The newest revision of Itunes IS a huge pain in the ass compared to the previous version. They should have called it Vista.

ok, i use a mac and i don't plan on switching,

so the general consensus i'm getting is: suck it up, use itunes.

in terms of doing something iTunes can't... i've always wanted to be able to cue and (more importantly) segue songs on my computer and whatnot. maybe i'm just not into techno enough to invest in a decent rig.

If you mean having one song fade into another you can do that with iTunes. Just play around with the options.

iTunes does suck pretty hard. I just use it because I have an iPod, and 99% of my music exists only on the iPod. I'm a pretty big fan of WMP, but I'd still like something better integrated into file browsing. I don't like having to wait for a big hefty program to start up every time I open a sound file... As far as windows is concerned, thumbnail previews are the best thing that's happened to picture browsing. It would be nice if music was as easy.

On windows MediaMonkey was my favorite. I kind of miss it's extensive file support and detailed tagging.

and in terms of playing around in the options for segues, you can do a general 1-3 second fade on everything, but that doesn't help me if i've got a punk song with a cold out going into a psych freakout and i want a long fade-in.

It sounds like you'd like VLC

Songbird is okay. Vox Is pretty good, a bit lightweight and barebonesish.
I've tried both of these and still prefer Itunes, although the new update is kind of a pain.

And if you install Fluke you can import FLAC into itunes without having to convert to a lossy format, or Apples bullshit music file.
