Alright here it is.......there already might be something similar, but i couldn't find it. Basically this is for people who play jazz, used to play jazz, or just listen to and enjoy jazz. Post your favorite artists, recordings, charts, or links to your group. If there's new stuff that the rest of us should check out, post it here. If you want to get your music out there, post it here. If you want to know when your favorite cats are coming to your town, ask here. I'll try to keep it updated with my personal favorites, and at the request of others i'll post concert dates and places. But yeah this is the jazz thread.....i figured the fish could use one
As for me, i play saxophone, clarinet, and piano in several small groups that play in and around Detroit, Michigan. The main groups i play with are the Grosse Pointe Hot 4, In The Pocket, and the Michigan State University Jazz Octet #2. My favorite artists are Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and Jaco Pastorius. I'm more into Hard Bob and Post Bob, but occasionally i like to jam a little dixieland (a la Charlie Gabriel)
so yeah if you're into jazz, peep this thread and fill us in to your favorite recordings, artists, and personal groups.
i play a lot of indian/african hand drums that can be used in jazz, i own a doumbek, below in the picture, bongos, and im saving up for a synthesizer
i enjoy bela fleck and the flecktones, there REALLY cool, great guitar and drums
Wow where do I begin. Glad to see longboarders listen to jazz. I skate to Bitches Brew all the time. I have a huge Jazz collection. Probably over a 1000 titles in both CD and Vinyl. Love the classics, Davis and Coltrane to name a few obvious choices but check out The Bad Plus, EST, Inhabitants, if you want something fresh. Its all good though. Absolutely love Jazz, can't play a lick though.
i dont listen to that much jazz (when i do its mostly coltraine or random mixes my friends have made for me) but i play jazz sax (done both alto and tenor, prefer the tenor but own an alto =/) and i also play jazz guitar on my Gibson es-330 (vintage XD )

where do you play? school jazz band? your own group? If i could recommend some music to start listening to (because the more you listen, the more you'll become familiar with the language of jazz......grow your soloing vocabulary, understand more complex changes and stuff): Check out Herbie Hancock-Maiden Voyage, check Miles Davis-Birth of the Cool, check Horace Silver-Re-entry, check Charles Mingus-The Clown. All great albums. keep lookin out man!

i used to play for my schools jazz band until they fired our old director and got a new one who totally blows, so now i just play on my own for fun (or occasionally with one of my buddies). Also, I was going through my dads vinyl collection and found several records of herbie and miles, good stuff

that's pretty solid.....i know all about new directors sucking it up.....keep swingin man 8)
Yeah....early Coltrane is sweet.....before he got pretentious and lost a sense of musical taste...........
links for those other guys?
Yeah, I like the old stuff. 1960 album, "My Favorite Things" and "Summertime", establishing the soprano sax, and 1957, "Off minor", from "Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane".

Sooo true. I've been playing alto and bari sax for about 6 years which are my main saxes, I mess around with soprano for a bit as well though. Right now only playing in high school jazz band which at my school is quite lame. I'm the only one who really knows how to solo and it gets annoying having to solo on every tune we play.
But for what I listen to...right now it's Stan Getz. I listen to a ton of Charles Mingus, a bit of Parker and Coltrane of course, Miles, Gerry Mulligan, and some John Zorn to throw in some contrast.

Good albums to check out: "One Up One Down Live at the Half Note" it's a four-track, 2 cd set.....each track is like 30 mins......epic soprano by trane.
and yea that Monk + Trane album is the sht, my favorite monk album.
Freaking love my jazz. Played bass for a few years, Chameleon is still my favourite bass line of all time. Just started playing drums too. Could really do with some pointers in the jazz drumming area. Big into the classics; Coltrane, Davis, Coleman, Dolphy, Hancock. Like my abstract stuff too, Otomo Yoshihide, Marc Ribot, so on.
You've got to check these guys out though, the drummer is phenomenal;
