any NE surfers out there?
was out today at narragansett for some messy waves, but waves nonetheless. I finally have a car and enough independence and free time to actually develop my surfing skills so I'm ready for the beginning of my trials as an east coast surfer I guess.
may we be blessed with lots of surf this upcoming summer as well as little rain as to infringe on any skate seshes.

Nick you do know that "Good Surf in New England" and "summer" are rarely spoken in the same paragraph let alone sentence...Invest in a wetsuit and make sure you have a pig/slug board

yeah i know, I plan on surfing year round now that I have a car to go when there's surf. I have a 4/3 (just waited like 4 weeks for the zipper to get repaired), boots, gloves, and hood...basically I'm probably going to become one of those guys out there even when it's like 25 degrees on shore.
I also recently bought an 8'6'' mini longboard in addition to my 6'10'' shortboard.
BTW on that, it felt really awkward yesterday to surf on a longboard, I think i still really prefer my shortboard, it's way easier to take out with me, and my foot placement was off when I was popping up on the longboard. I guess it'll serve me well in spells of like 2ft waves though.

Re: any NE surfers out there?
I prefer longboards but I prefer actual warm (80plus) water more, Longboards are snake boards, you can get on the wave earlier and surf longer though slower than a shortboard. Plus there is the whole paddling out thing which is easier on a longboard (as long as you know how to duck dive a longboard that is). Much less energy has to be expended on a longboard

hehe yeah, BTW, how do you duck dive a longboard?
I defintely agree with the energy thing though, once you get a longboard going it's like a canoe. Also Xgecko, where are you actually supposed to position yourself on a longboard when preparing to catch a wave, I kept missing them, maybe I was too far up?
I kept slipping off, maybe it was just due to a bad job waxing on my part, I did it in the parking lot in about 5 minutes. I don't slip at all when I get on my shortboard, my back foot kept slipping off. how much wax should you actually use on a board? (using mrs. palmers here)

yeah definitely dude, on labor day two years ago there was a massive swell. I went down to east matunuck and it was actually barreling, probably 7-9ft. There was actually a break in between block island and east matunuck showing itself.
BTW, you RI guys, where do you prefer to surf? I spent the past times I've been surfing going to mostly east matunuck, but I think a winter storm screwed it up because the waves break so close to shore now. So far I've been to second beach, which was like an open ocean narragansett, matunuck, and narragansett. I've heard good things about the lighthouse though.
I don't mean to bust anyone's secret spots if there are any, but I just want to know where the best places to go when we have surf are.

depends on the board, my 9' rule beater board and my 8'6" duckdive like a shortboard, my 10'2" required some effort to push more than the nose through a wave...practice

if you are too far back the wave will pass you by, if you are too far forward the board with pearl (an altogether unpleasant experience, which usually means a lung full of water) but the fine line between too far forward and just right isn't to hard to find...poping up on a front loaded board means as you walk to the tail, the board often sets up fron a nice bottom turn (more so for me frontside than back).

Wax....lots of wax...my 10'2" used nearly 2 bars of wax from bare board, I always used a traction pad at the back of the board just so I knew where the tail was when I was walking around...I was a diehard Sticky Bumps fan...BTW make sure you get the rail area of your pop/push up spots with lots of wax. Leash...get a long one or go without I only used one when waves were +4feet but that had more to do with scaring people than common sense (people stay out of your way when you are leashless)

Re: any NE surfers out there?
Damn I am SO jonseing to go surfing in RI. I tried it once last year in North Carolina - barely got up for one second. Super choppy conditions and a real crappy short board. I need to "learn" on a 8 ft plus board (I think). If anyone is ever down to loan a board for a sesh - I would LOVE to join you sometime. I'll buy you some beer - give you gas $ or whatever.
Sept. seems to be the best time of the year to go swimming in the ocean in RI temp. wise. It is for sure the best time to go boogie boarding. I am down for riding waves any time/any way/ any where - I still love straight up body surfing too.
Charleston Beach is great for skimboarding. I haven't done that in years. Zap is asking for some mad cash for those boards - this old geezer doesn't get it. My home made "piece of wood" worked great back in the 80's.
After riding my Surf-Rod around lately - I cannot even begin to tell you how bad I wanna surf. And if you have not tried a Surf-Rod yet - you will be blown away. Anyone wants to try it - let me know - Wayne is SO down for sharing boards at a sesh. And I'd gladly let any surfer (or anyone for that matter) give mine a try.
Hope to get out there with you sometime...

The following link will be your best friend Narragansett Surf Camera, Surf Report and Forecast - Northeast, New England | Surfline. You will want to get a nice 5mm winter suit (hood built-in), booties and gloves. Then you will be able to surf in the coldest of cold. Honestly, NE gets much better swell in the winter. Longer board will allow you to catch waves much earlier and will be stable. Practice duck diving as it will save you. Post on this link whenever you are gonna get out. If I am not at work I will try and be there. One of the best feelings of my life was the first time I actually got up and turned with a wave. You'll know what I mean....
Scott
sorry I didn't even realize you posted scott, totally forgot about that you surf.
I recently got a longboard but haven't used in much yet. I think I need to wax it more because I kept slipping on it the other day and just turning to my shortboard. First try I got up on my shortboard after like 45mins of trying to use my longboard.
On the topic I'm seriously thinking about heading down to narragansett tomorrow afternoon, magic seaweed is giving it a two star swell rating. I'll probably try to get down there for around 3pm. Surfline is also predicting some alright surf and decent winds. I love that webcam BTW.
As far as my abilities I can pretty much get up on a wave all the time on my shortie, it's just the actual surfing part I need to learn. I would be grateful for any help you could give me in surfing.
Part of what I need to do is just try to get down there whenever I can. With a few hours in the water tomorrow I should be able to get up and ride my board pretty easily. It was definitely apparent to me that I hadn't been surfing in like 7 months. I will definitely be getting a 5mm for next winter so I can surf all year. I already have a 4/3, hood, boots, and gloves.
