was out today at narragansett for some messy waves, but waves nonetheless. I finally have a car and enough independence and free time to actually develop my surfing skills so I'm ready for the beginning of my trials as an east coast surfer I guess.
may we be blessed with lots of surf this upcoming summer as well as little rain as to infringe on any skate seshes.
Nick you do know that "Good Surf in New England" and "summer" are rarely spoken in the same paragraph let alone sentence...Invest in a wetsuit and make sure you have a pig/slug board

Nick,
Congrats on getting your own wheels I surf year round mostly Point Judith area. Naragansett town beach is a good spot to learn (sandy bottom). Town beach tends to close out a lot but when your just starting out who cares. The following link will be your best friend Narragansett Surf Camera, Surf Report and Forecast - Northeast, New England | Surfline. You will want to get a nice 5mm winter suit (hood built-in), booties and gloves. Then you will be able to surf in the coldest of cold. Honestly, NE gets much better swell in the winter. Longer board will allow you to catch waves much earlier and will be stable. Practice duck diving as it will save you. Post on this link whenever you are gonna get out. If I am not at work I will try and be there. One of the best feelings of my life was the first time I actually got up and turned with a wave. You'll know what I mean....

yeah i know, I plan on surfing year round now that I have a car to go when there's surf. I have a 4/3 (just waited like 4 weeks for the zipper to get repaired), boots, gloves, and hood...basically I'm probably going to become one of those guys out there even when it's like 25 degrees on shore.
I also recently bought an 8'6'' mini longboard in addition to my 6'10'' shortboard.
BTW on that, it felt really awkward yesterday to surf on a longboard, I think i still really prefer my shortboard, it's way easier to take out with me, and my foot placement was off when I was popping up on the longboard. I guess it'll serve me well in spells of like 2ft waves though.
I prefer longboards but I prefer actual warm (80plus) water more, Longboards are snake boards, you can get on the wave earlier and surf longer though slower than a shortboard. Plus there is the whole paddling out thing which is easier on a longboard (as long as you know how to duck dive a longboard that is). Much less energy has to be expended on a longboard

SKIMBOARDERSSSSSS lol, thers more skimboarders in new england than surfers. im talkin like real skimboarders, not those kids you see throwin pieces of wood on the sand though.

hehe yeah, BTW, how do you duck dive a longboard?
I defintely agree with the energy thing though, once you get a longboard going it's like a canoe. Also Xgecko, where are you actually supposed to position yourself on a longboard when preparing to catch a wave, I kept missing them, maybe I was too far up?
I kept slipping off, maybe it was just due to a bad job waxing on my part, I did it in the parking lot in about 5 minutes. I don't slip at all when I get on my shortboard, my back foot kept slipping off. how much wax should you actually use on a board? (using mrs. palmers here)
I try to surf You can't forget about hurricane season end of summer/early fall!
yeah definitely dude, on labor day two years ago there was a massive swell. I went down to east matunuck and it was actually barreling, probably 7-9ft. There was actually a break in between block island and east matunuck showing itself.
BTW, you RI guys, where do you prefer to surf? I spent the past times I've been surfing going to mostly east matunuck, but I think a winter storm screwed it up because the waves break so close to shore now. So far I've been to second beach, which was like an open ocean narragansett, matunuck, and narragansett. I've heard good things about the lighthouse though.
I don't mean to bust anyone's secret spots if there are any, but I just want to know where the best places to go when we have surf are.
