We have a nice little hill on a dead end street in Antrim with a starting ramp perched on it. Most dry Sundays at noon I set up slalom cones and skate it with whoever I can drag along. It's about 25 cones max, with either a few big carves and step off at the end, or turn around if you can, or I suppose you could footbrake. (slide your sliders, of course, just don't slide the slalom wheels). The chain link fence will stop you if all else fails. The other side of the hill is a very gradual, flat incline, perfect for noobs, cross-stepping, or pumping teqhniques. I can now pump UP it after a few pushes, which makes me smile. Many just come along to try out the boards, the starting ramp, or to learn a little about Slalom Racing or Carving or Sliding rigs.
It's a pretty small hill, mainly worth the trip if you want to try the slalom course or meet other longboarders. Nobody bothers us there, and the only vehicle traffic is us. We'll often ditch the noobs and go out for some bigger, scarier hills after. If I get a few committed racers interested in regular training or racing, I'll look into becoming more of a burden to the community and grabbing a bigger hill for a few hours for Sunday sessions. This town is pretty skater friendly, and I sorta know someone who knows someone... bada bing...
I recommend bringing water, sunscreen, bug spray and PROTECTION. This is not a very fast hill, but if you get halfway serious about racing or DH you will soon start seeing the helmet and pads as essential gear.
Like I said, MOST dry Sundays I set the course. Get in the email loop for other times, cancels or time changes.
Hey there. I'm from brattleboro vermont, which is about an hour away from antrim. I've never tried slalom, but i downhill, and i boardwalk, and pump, and pretty much everything. I'd love to come out sometime and skate with you guys, whether it be trying slalom, or doing some downhill, as there arent many (none) skaters in my area. Any more info you have would be great!
Well, my dh setup is a modded-diamond tailed pressure drop rd 42 (which is now 38") with bears and 75mm slalom type wheels. I also have an insect big bug for the cruising, and i have a beat up loaded pintail for powerslides and speed checks and the like. I may have access to a 32" board that I made, which I based the design off a gs board (I gave it to my friend to use), so if i'm going to run cones, i might bring that just to tool around on...
No worries, I'll keep setting this up every Sunday until it gets to cold or snowy, barring unforseen circumstances.
BTW this won't be happening Sunday Sept 21 because of the gi-normous Slalom Race here in town - you should definitely check it out, it starts Friday and goes all weekend.
If no slalom types are there by 12:30 (like last week) we may just pack up the cones and go hill bombing in the hot part of the day, and come back later when we feel like it.
So If you're making a trip for it and might be late, let me know.
