Re: Central Park Race 2008!
Is this a technically difficult or demanding event to participate in? I consider myself a beginner and don't think I will make an impressive showing in any way other than looking like an idiot, but if you think it's doable for someone whose only been skating for a couple months then I'm there. It'll be cool to meet some cats who also have a passion for LBing as I always skate alone. If you've attended in the past just give me a quick idea of what to expect/prepare for.
Thanks

There is a sizable bunch of riders (myself included) who are not trying to "make an impressive showing". Still, it's physically demanding to push up the hills, even if you're not trying to compete.
Skillwise, there are crowds (bikers, peds, horsedrawn carriages, and 150+ crazed longboarders) and other random obstacles (mainly bad pavement and horse$hit) that you have to be able to negotiate. There are a few downhills where you need to be able to control your board at speeds up to 20mph or so.
Not too tough really. If I can do it, so can you.

Yea, if you go into a tuck on the biggest hill on this course the top you'll hit is around 25, but its unlikely to hit that if you're new to the sport. Its not your traditional race, its mostly just kicking and its not like this is a technical course, its just going around the road.

Re: Central Park Race 2008!
I'm there. Thanks for the responses guys. I'm really looking forward to skating with a group of other people cause none of my good friends have any interest in skating because they're ####### stupid. Is there anything I should bring to the race that I won't think of?

The fastest hill (that goes against traffic) is around 27-30 something. Depends how wind is treating you. The hill we go down thats after the biggest hill is 26mph according to a biker that trailed GravityRider.

Some food and water cause that part of town is not cheap to pick those things up in.

Re: Central Park Race 2008!
I lived in NYC for three years and worked at the Sam Ash Guitar store on 48th st, so I already know the deal about getting raped at the grocery stores and bodegas. I used to shop on Long Island near my parents' house and then drive it to my apartment. I saved thousands of dollars doing this. I'll definitely bring a lot of water and some snacks to keep my blood sugar up and maybe some band-aids to keep the blood in.

Re: Central Park Race 2008!
I just read that the record is 23 minutes.
My best time this year is 17-18 minutes.
That made my whole morning.
