Re: NYC traffic law ALLOWS Skateboards on the street
I've never gotten hassled in NYC as it was...
But....Just be careful, My town allows them as well. But if you pull any dangerous crap you'll get pinched. Ex: running red lights, stop signs, going against traffic, weaving through cars, etc. No matter how much I try to reason with a cop that it's "legal for me to be in the street" they still perceive my presence in the street as dangerous and they hassle.
Re: NYC traffic law ALLOWS Skateboards on the street
I made a post in the general discussion about this. In my college town whenever they saw anybody using a skateboard on the street, sidewalk, whatever, they would tell you its "illegal", get off the board etc.
I was riding downhill when I still had the skatebrake thing and a police car rolled up. They took my board and made me get into the vehicle and the escorted me back to my dorm room. I finally found concrete information and figured it would be helpful if anything of the sort happened to anybody in NY.
My question to you is do you ride on the street or the sidewalk? Because if everybody rides on the street no wonder everybodys been telling me to get smaller wheels.

Actually, this legislation is pretty amazing and definitely great to have -- I'm printing out a copy to keep with me. However, if I'm reading correctly, this isn't for New York City -- this is for State Roads throughout the state of New York. Which would mean skating the Adirondacks and Catskills and Harriman (or any other kickass state roads) is perfectly legal and cops have no recourse to kick us off the highways.
New York City has its own ordinances for skating in the street, and it's definitely legal (as long as you follow traffic laws, which we rarely do). Skating on sidewalks, in public areas like Union Square, or on any private property can get you a pretty severe ticket though. My street skater friend Andrew is on "skate probation" in the city right now -- if he gets caught skating in Union Square again, he could face some serious fines.
EDIT: note that individual towns may have their own ordinances for city streets... that's why sometimes little towns can outlaw skating.

I might be the luckiest of all you... my town's police couldn't give a damn about skateboarders. I skate in and out of traffic and don't follow any motor vehicle rules. Then again, I live in the most notoriously corrupt County in NJ. The cops are too busy doing "other" things.
